    Selfish drives?

    Hello,

Has anyone ever come across a situation where a drive won't play nice and share an IDE channel with another drive?

I've just swapped my old LS-120 over for a HiFD (Not much more in storage, but at least it doesn't sound like a rotary phone when seeking ), and it's set to slave, just like the LS-120 was. It's supposed to share the secondary IDE channel with a DVD-ROM drive as the master, but every time I turn my PC on the HiFD drive isn't detected. If I disconnect the DVD-ROM drive, it suddenly appears.

I know hard drives like channels to themselves, but is this normal?

Are the pins in the back set correctly?

As I said, the pins on the HiFD are set exactly the same as the LS-120 (Which worked), the BIOS detects the HiFD as the slave when the DVD-ROM drive is disconnected, and it detects the DVD-ROM drive as the master when it is conected, so it isn't a pin problem as far as I can see.

I've now swapped the roles of the drives (The HiFD is now the master, the DVD-ROM the slave) and it works fine. Still don't get why the HiFD wouldn't be the slave, though.

    Oh well, never mind.

Well, it's an Intel BX chipset with their IDE controller, so yeah, maybe it's something to do with that, not that I've heard anything bad about Intel chipsets (You'd assume they know what they're doing, having made the CPU an' all...)
