Thread: No-name, chkdsk and corrupted files...

    No-name, chkdsk and corrupted files...

    Hey everyone... My harddrive died about a month ago and I rushed out and bought a new one (Cicero - noname brand?).

    Now, about a month later, I'm starting to get errors all over the place. Every couple of days chkdsk will run and fix about 10 errors; then, just today and yesterday, Windows started popping up messages that config files are corrupt and to run chkdsk to fix them. So I run chkdsk, and it deletes some corrupt files; I run it again to make sure that everything's OK and it re-deletes the same files, and does so again and again each time I run it. Then mysteriously when I open MSVC, it pops up a message saying "Maggots.opt" (my latest project's OPT file) is corrupt and I need to run chkdsk, which naturally doesn't fix the file. So I'm starting to wonder, is my 1-month old harddrive about to die on me?

    2 hdd's in 2 months is no coincidence, it's not your hdd, it's windows. What version of windows do you have? I'm assuming 9x since it runs chkdsk.

    Actually, I ran Windows 98SE on the first one for about 2 years. Then it died. Then I got a new harddrive, and installed WindowsXP Pro on it. Sooooo, I don't really see the relationship unless it's a problem with all versions of Windows. But the question still stands, is my harddrive about to give out?

    ChkDsk is WindowsXP; for Windows98SE it's ScanDisk.

    virus?? try the drive in another system, and check your ram, bad ram is a cause of file and MFT corruption.

    No virus; I can't check it in another system because it's formatted with NTFS and my other systems are win95, win98 and win3.1.

    How can I check my RAM?

    ChkDsk is WindowsXP; for Windows98SE it's ScanDisk.
    Actually chkdsk has been around since DOS.

    Odd, I never knew that. Then why did MS get rid of ScanDisk with XP?

    well there's various ways, to do it with software, get a copy of himem.sys (comes with win9x usually, don't know about xp) I'd say install 9x on a drive and pop that into your comp, boot to DOS then find himem.sys (can't remember if it's in the root or not) run it, it should report a crapload of errors if your memory is bad...or you could swap memory from another pc and check for a performace difference.

    Ok, thanks. I don't know about installing 98 because I don't feel like creating a partition (partitions were never my thing) and I don't have another spare harddrive because I already refunded the harddrive getting errors. So I guess I'll see if this one starts getting corrupted files too. If it does... well, I guess it's either the OS or the RAM then. Otherwise, I'm happy

    the chances its the OS, are... slim.
