Question 768mb ram only 512 being used?

I run Win98SE and about 2 weeks ago I bought 512mb ram from crucial. As of now I have 768, though crucial tells me on there website that I have to change the vcache settings in the system.ini file.

    What should I do, specifically?

I know there is something to change in the registry on 98 so it can use more than 512mb. I'll go find that now and get back to you .

    Upgrade your OS....

Actually that was the main reason I went to XP.

I mean, this is not really productive help, but he might be right. XP is the better OS - at least after you found out how to disable all those kiddy features.

It's quite stable. For a Windows.

Somehow I like Windows 2000 better. I know XP == 2000 but 2000 just feels more rock solid. No little popups, no little gay theme features.

I wonder why windows 2000 pro costs more than XP pro...

I thought 2000 == NT upgrade, while XP was suppose to be the first true integrations between the NT and Regular windows.

As for why it cost more, because they can sell it for that.

Because 2k is stable and XP is trash. Even children (highschoolers, mostly gamers) I have talked with refer to xp as "X-tra Problems".

    XP trash huh

But yeah, if you want to run over 512 MB of RAM (even over 128 really) you should probably go to Win 2000 or XP in order to make better use of it.

Spawning 4 copys of svchost.exe, that constantly get into invinite loops and eat 100% cpu, causing unnumbered crashes alone is enough of a reason to consider alternatives. Yes, all the problems put together equates trash. If xp was free, i still wouldnt run it.

I'll get back to you the day mine does that... but given that I've been running on the same format since I upgraded my motherboard (nearly a year now) with the number of crashes that I can count on my hand (maybe 2 or 3 that weren't my fault) I'd have to say there's nothing wrong. Also, I have 6 SVCHOST.EXE running right now, each with 0% CPU usage...

On my second computer I had XP running for 4 weeks straight. No shutdowns, no reboots, not even going to sleep or hibernate. 4 weeks straight until it finally crashed on a problem related to the 3rd party drivers for my VooDoo 5 5500....

I find that the most people who complain about XP are the ones that have never used it as their own OS.

I had it on my toshiba laptop for 3 months. Every time i booted those 4 copys of svchost would get into something and start lagging my poor pooter to ......... I recieved numerous BSODs and crashes every time i tried to use the infared remote control, or play games that used openGL. After a while the copys of svchost would crash themselves and reboot without warning. PCMCIA only worked about half the time. I tried to load it on my new system running SATA raid 1, and it wouldnt even install. Everybody has their own experiences, and i respect that, however everybodys hardware is different as well. My particular hardware configuration, on 2 seperate systems, has led me to my conclusion.

svchost processes are simply wrappers around things installed as services, in themselves, they do very little. If an svchost.exe is hogging the cpu, then it is one of the services installed in your machine that is the culprit, not the host process. You should check to see what services are installed, and then narrow down to find out which is giving this problem and either remove it or re-install it.

What I don't like about XP is that it assumes it knows more about networking than the user and makes it difficult for the user to change networking parameters. I am writing to you now on a P-II running '95, beside it is a P-IV running XP which I can't use for surfing, the network connection is to unreliable.

All the "themes" stuff and visual tricks I have turned off, they irritated me as well.

I've used win2k for quite some time before I converted to winxp. I don't recall the exact problem I had with 2k, but I know I tried for several weeks to solve it because I didn't want to convert to XP. I thought it might be a good OS for the playstation but not to "work" with it.

Anyway, I'm quite glad I converted to XP in the end. The "themes" are just replacements for the control3d dlls anyway, so you don't loose any speed if you stick with the win2k style "theme".

I've not yet had a single bluescreen. You know the real win2k bluescreen where it tells you to reinstall the OS etc - though one time I had an app that switched to a strange display mode and somehow prevented the task manager from showing up on CTRL+ALT+DEL. That was the only time I had to hit the hardware reset button. Of course thats still one time too often.

Because they want people to convert to winxp. In the end it means more money for M$ because the "upgrade" isn't for free either.
And of course it's cheaper if you don't need to support multiple products.

drdroid, contact me on AIM (as o0obruceleeo0o), MSN (as [email protected]), or on YahooIM (as o0obruceleeo0o) and I will walk you through it.... You will need to describe for me what you see for me to tell you what to do, since it's been a while since I ran win98 .
