samba is a file sharing program. it lets windows see linux shares. i dont know why that was mentioned.

linux can keep the ports open, but a router would be annoying here. if you dint disable it you will have to allow each connection or a range.

just get a switch and have every one connect to that. dont plug in your wan to it. thats about as easy as you can make it.

He said he wanted the LAN users to have access to his public files and I assumed he meant a share on his server.

Like I said earlier. Just set iptables to accept all connections on the LAN interface and it will allow your game server to function correctly.

Have you been reading the same thread as me? He said he doesn't want to share the connection with the rest of his LAN. Only the Linux box will have access to the Internet but they'll be connected to his Linux box for file sharing and the Linux box is his game server.

i betting the linux box will only give people of a copy of the game.

maybe im missing something here but it sounds like all you need is a switch.

no internet connection, so no security isnt needed and the switch will do the routing for you. plus it might give you lag the other way.

switch and a couple of cdrs....

    sorry if im missing something.

Most distros come with it on the CD but you can get the source or packages from www.samba.org. http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO.html for info on setting it up.
