making ide cable::things i need to know?

I've got some ribbon cable and quick snap on connectors laying around. I've made cables before to run between microprocessors and terminal blocks, and from block to block as well. They've worked just fine (since it's just wire anyway). But, im a little weary of joining the cables in the same way that ide cables are...i know that i have to make sure i put wire one on pin one on all the devices...but it there anything else i need to be aware of before i spend hours trying to make something work that won't.

PS: In case you're wondering why im making cables it's because the ide cables that came with the computer are too short to set up a hdd master cd slave on both the primary and secondary channels....they're long enough that i can do one at a time, but they won't stretch far enough to to both (bottom hdd cant reach either cd)

You might be able to buy some cables that will work for you. I just encountered a similar problem upgrading a computer, but I grabbed a new cable and replaced the old one with it, and the spacing between the connectors was different so it worked. You might want to try that.
    Away.

    okely dokely, thanks

I would buy a cable, but it's quicker and cheaper for me to make one since i have the stuff just laying around...all i have to do is cut the wire and snap on the connector.

i've never made my own cable but i've moved the connectors to different places on the cable and added a third plug to an IDE so i could run a cdrom and two hard drives on the secondary. People keep telling me that doesnt work, but my pc is my proof.

    Good luck
