PC not working!

Hi folks!

well... me got a serious problem

I just bought a new Switched power supply for my system because the old one screwed up, now I've plugged EVERYTHING in the way it should be, and it's not booting up!

when I switch the mains on the CPU fan spins the stops spinning, so it can't be the motherboard and the reset, power, HDD light etc... etc... are in the correct places (followed the manual) and when I press the power button, GODZOOKS!!! nothing happens!

anyone had this problem, if so what could be the problem?

What did "me" do to screw up the old one? Has "me" screwed up something else?

Just because some of the power rails are running does not mean all of them are running. Just because the fan bus on the mobo is working does not mean the mobo is not fried electronically. Could be anything.

So, what did "me" do to blow up the old one?

well... "me" didn't do anything, I was playing a game and it just well... switched its self off, strange, but true!

I thought maybe the switching power supply screwed so I bought a 300W power supply. plugged it all in, again, nothing happened! perhaps part of the motherboard got fried, but I am seriously stuck, any, 'useful' answers would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Try plugging one thing in at a time and see if you can isolate the problem, perhaps one of your other pieces of hardware is giving you a hard time. Try plugging in just the mobo, then add the hard drives, etc. If it won't turn on with just the motherboard plugged in, then you probably fried the board.

If you have a pentium board then it sounds like you forgot to plug in your 12V connector. Otherwise, I would guess that you accidentally ESD'd the board. Although it is a possibility that your second PSU is also damaged, it is unlikely. As a last resort try a friends PSU.

Oh, if you were messing around and you accidentally 'loosened' or 'removed' the 2-pin connector for the power switch you can either use a screw-driver to start the system (by connecting the two pins) or else by reconnecting the power switch if that is what happened.

hmm... well... I've disconnected the FDD and the HDD and the CDD and nothing happens! argghh!!! tried to isolate by trying one peripheral at a time but nothing happens.

does it matter what power supply you use?

What? You don't need to disconnect any of those. Any ATX power supply with enough Watts to power your MB should work.

Yes. There is more than just the wattage to consider. Many modern mobo's have 2 power connectors, the regular "big" one and a smaller one to give some extra "oomph" to the CPU. Not all power supplies come with the second cable for this connector. If your board needs that and you've not provided it, it won't work. So you need to check that.

Remember what I said before, (and I was being helpful!), just because the CPU fan is going round does not mean the mobo is working, it only indcates that the fan bus power rail is getting juice. Often when a PSU packs up the fans still work, there are at least 6 power rails, (if you count 0V), any of them failing will stop the system from working, but not necessarily stop the fans. That said, PSU's are pretty reliable unless they're being abused and will run for years.

Have you been overclocking your CPU? What made you suspect the old PSU was dead?

Well... as I said before, I was playing a game and the PC just switched off, to be honest I assumed it was the power supply mainly because when I switched it on nothing happened, but recently I bought a new 300W PSU and when I switch the mains on the fan in the PSU spins and when I press the power on button nothing happens, it's doing my head in LOL, big time!!

I've followed the motherboard manual, for your info I have a
MS-6156 Micro ATX BX10 motherboard. this mobo doesn't have an 'extra' connector like my other one

Before the CPU fan worked but not now, so I've probably blown it trying to sort it out (

It sounds like maybe you fried something, and not the PSU. As adrian said, PSUs don't die...nothing moves in there, the capacitors are good for practically forever...nothing should break. Perhaps you just stressed some part (CPU or RAM are likely) too much with the game and it had a small defect...

maybe you fried your chip as well. My last processor fried because the PSU was failing a bit, and the fan on the CPU lost power for a while. Bye, bye K6-2. Is your hard drives spinning?

nope, nothing is working, everything is in place, the cpu fan won't even spin now *sigh* nevermind, I suppose it's one of those things, but I've only had the PC for a couple of years

I tried a few things last night, but had no luck!

Does your case have a line fuse that you have blown? If nothing is working, then it should be something pretty simple and fundemental.
