    computer problems after proggy installation

I recently installed a program and now various other programs refuse to work correctly. Some just crash on initialization, others report an error "linked to missing export KERNEL32.DLL". Anyone have any idea what could be causing this error?

Also, my firewall keeps alerting my that many of my programs have been replaced, as if someone modified them (quake3,internet explorer, mIRC, netscape6, WinMX). But most of the programs that have been replaced dont seem like a usual target for a trojan or hijacking, much less all of them at once.

If anyone can provide some help i would be eternally greatful

"quake3,internet explorer, mIRC, netscape6, WinMX" all sound like common programs that could be the target of a trojan to me. What type of program did you install? Can you trust it, or could it be infected junk? Kernel32.dll is a very important file, and it sounds like yours has been deleted or corrupted - you could try to get a copy of it from someone with the same version of Windows...but I would suggest using a "restore" or "go back" feature if you have one, to see if that will fix the problem.
    Away.

Replace your Kernel32.dll with a new version. Then re-register the library (pass it's directory and filename to regsvr32.exe).

I just found out that im infected with the w32.pinfi worm, which appends its code to all executables it can find, so that explains why my firewall is complaining. Im currently trying to get rid of it (its a tough one), but that still doesnt explain the kernel.dll problem

The program i installed was kazaalite downloaded through IRC. The person i got it from is trustworthy, but i suppose he doesnt know he is infected.

Anyone know how to boot into safe mode or some non-windows mode without a boot disk (cant find mine, and if i make another one, the files will probably just be infected). My OS is Win98

Hit F8 when your PC is booting, and a menu should come up allowing you to select safe mode/DOS.
