I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, but I think I might know. The grammar in the first two lines of the post is fairly confusing.

If you just have a bunch of files on the hard drive that you don't need, I would suggest

    1) Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs
Remove all of the programs that you don't want. It's a little bit safer than just deleting the files.

    2) My Computer -> C:\ (or whatever hard drive it is)
Just start deleting folders with things in them that you don't want. Probably (almost) everything that isn't in the /WINNT/ directory is safe to delete.

You might want to make a backup of the hard drive before you do any of this if you can, if there is anything particularly important on there. If the problem is with the Windows install and you don't have the disk...I would suggest getting a CD with it, installing a version that you have, or giving up. Good luck, I hope I was helpful.
    Away.

it sounds like you want to format the drive and install XP clean. If so put the cd in the drive and restart the machine. Adjust your bios to boot from cd then follow onscreen instructions.

    oh .....
so, if let's say that i would like to format again the current drive, and install it again the win xp. i'm sure that the windows xp installer startup would not giving some option to format the computer, unless the user should have to delete the partition and create again the partition.
    so any comment?
and sorry for grammar mistake, hope that you all will know what the meaning that i mention.

You said you had a win98 startup disk. Just put that in, run "fdisk", delete old partitions, create new logical dos partition 'C', then restart, keep disk in, and then run "format" to format the drive. Then, go into your bios, change your #1 boot drive to your cd rom, then load the cd and restart the computer. It will start the setup and reinstall. Boom, fresh version of XP.

P.S. Before you do any of this, you will want to unregister your version of XP, that way you dont have problems when trying to reinstall and use your same key. Also make sure to change your #1 boot drive back to floppy, or atleast take out the CD when restarting.

well... that's why the problem found that the NTFS file system can't access by the FAT32. therefore, if i'm using the win98 startup disk, i could found the drive, becoz the drive was formatted in NTFS file system. yeah .. you're right if wish to delete the partition and re-create again the partition. -- so if let's say that the extended partition would be act as a backup drive. i think i shouldn't prefer to delete the partition. so, is there any way to format the current drive with NTFS file system and install the fresh win xp without deleting the partition.

p/s : i might think that the win98 startup disk didn't have any option to format particular drive with NTFS file system.

:P anyway, thank for the comment, so, any additional comments?

You dont need to do that, trust me, i just reloaded XP this morning, lol. If you create your partition, using fat32 and format it, when you load XP, it will ask you if you want to convert the partition to NTFS. Trust me. It says hit 'p' for yes, or something along those lines, just go with what it says. It works fine because thats what i did, i only had a win98 start-up disk, formated, booted cd, and started installation and converted to NTFS from the install.
