    Very strange bug...

I'm not exactly sure why this has been happening, but every once in a while, all the icons on my desktop will get a strange square in the bottom left corner. Right now i have a "W" in the bottom of all my icons...I think I saw it in an application I was running earlier. My best explanation is that it's something my video card has caused, since it has proved to do some strange things. When I first got it installed (ATI Radeon 8500 something or other) I noticed also that the title bar of my windows will no longer blend from one color on one side to, say, a lighter color on the other (ex. dark blue-light blue). Actually it will, but after a little while it will go to a solid color. Another problem I've had, is that after running some fullscreen applications, my screen resolution seems to change from between 600x800 and 640x480 pixels. When I check the settings, it is still on 600x800 but my icons dont fit on the screen like they did before. None of this is really important, as all my games play well (and that's what counts, right?). I have a feeling NVIDIA is better, and in any case, my next video card won't be from ATI.

For something that very well may be your fault your giving up on ATI? Yea that makes a world of sense. Are you using the correct drivers?

Totally agreed. Choosing ATi cards is your first step to best 3D gaming experience.

BTW, what is the connection between color blends with the so-called small strange square with your icons?
It's unfulfilled dreams that keep you alive.

I bet it is something you did, not the graphics card. ATI cards have always been more reliable for me than NVidia based ones (I got a GeForce 4 right now, and I'm never going to buy another NVidia card ever again.).

I got some questions to ask:

    1. Is this the original card in your computer? I had a problem kinda like this one time, because I didn't uninstall the drivers for my old one before putting in the new one.
    2. Are you using ATI's official drivers or another company's?
    3. Have you ran DXDiag yet? It can tell you problems with your card sometimes.
    4. Is this the ATI Radeon 8500 card manufactured by ATI or is it just the chip on somebody else's card?

    1. No it's not, but I did uninstall all my old drivers

    2. ATI's drivers

3.DXdiag? Should I have it or do I have to download it? (Edit-Found it and found no problems with it)

    4.It's manufactured by ATI

Ok, I agree it probably is my fault, and I made quite a hasty judgement about ATI...

my advice is to remove the card and uninstall all the changes u made. Re-install the old card to do this of course, than install the new card and let xp (if your using xp) set it up. If its not xp, follow the instructions once more. Also check to make usre your using 32 color, and try a lower resolution perhaps.

I think not...I had enough trouble getting it installed once. My computer wasnt working for like a week! One tech support guy said we had a micro crack in our motherboard, but somehow we got it working without them sending us a new one (even though they said they shipped it, turns out they had some address in another state...) I'm happy with tings the way they are unless there is an easier way to fix it...Oh and I have Windows 98...guess I should've said that in the first place
