I dont think that everyone who hates linux uses a specific linux distro so that they can say they are using linux.

The reason I dislike RH is beacuse of the how much a pain in the 4ss it was for me to configure and install anything from source. and lets not even get in to DAYS I spend trying to install an rpm for something that I want to use! RPM's IMHO are as bad a dll-hell. The Cylical dependencies I ran in to were just so much fun to try to resolve!

Personaly for linux I use slak, gentoo, and freeBSD (I know its not linux). For windows I use 2k.

If you really want to to the "jump in the middle of a lake to see if you can swim" method you can try slakware.

i kind of figured rpm hell, but i know theres some better rpm programs at freshmeat.

but i heard that they changed some of the unix style, like with startup. im not a precompiled fan either, i trued gentoo but i kept getting kernel panics.

besides from that is this a good start? im starting to wonder if linux is even the way, maybe a bsd switch over is what i need. but then again that rhce stuff sounds good to know/get.

Personaly I view the RHCE apx == MCSE.
    Did you try Slakware??
Also with gentoo what kernel sources were you using?
What kinda kernel Panics did you get?

really? i thought they were just under cisco for the best it cert to get

vanilla, then the gentoo optimized smp(i dont actually have 2 processors, i have one pentium 4 with hyperthreading and i remembered on slashdot that smp is the only way to use it. works fine in redhat).

could mount root filesystem in rw. i tried a couple diff way. i might try that it again. im in 10th grade now and i figure id keep to redhat since being a rhce seemed look a good idea and it would give me alot of practice. but i just like the idea of portage.

I just recently installed RedHat 8.0 and I personally like it.

RPMs are actually quite nice, if used correctly. I don't believe that every program should be an RPM. A game for example. All they really got to do is make a directory and throw crap into it.

I never tried Slackware, but I've heard it is great. I've also heard SuSE is good.

The only distro I don't like so far is Mandrake. It is so unprofessional and everything is all spread out. "The most user friendly Linux distro" my ........... It's not bad and all, but I think it is highly overrated.

The LPI is the cert that is just under Cisco. That sounds odd that you were using the general sources.
I never really liked RH. I really dislike doing any development on it. Its really bad.. Ive always gotten hit by versions squeue, or version depend's with rpms.

Slak.. now that is a distro!! Its not user friendly.. Its admin friendly. My problem with RH is that it tries to do everything for you. Much like a OS/company we all know and love <gag>

As for the gentoo system.. did you try to build a monolythic kernel? and did that work? If not then something your kernel needed was built as a module that you needed and you were not able to use it.

the gentoo ones crapped out on me and the officals ones all ways worked for me.

sorry to keep asking this, but what! you mean all those gui configuration apps? and how can any form of unix be thought of with a micro$oft product! thats just evil.

I installed RH 8.0 on one of my boxes. I was planning on using it as a server box, and with servers i do not have compilers on there. just for saftey reasons. Well RH installed X KDE, GNOME, every server under the sun, and a bunch of applications that were used to make the system easier to configure (and 3/4 of the time it didnt work). And that was with my telling RH to ask me before it installed anything.

Did you click custom or server setup. I clicked the custom setup and it only installed the stuff I specified.

i thought the admins way was to have those seperate. and not having gcc would bug me, but technically i think redhats right. what about start up? i heard its not "the unix way".

so basicly, the only real problems with redhat are its installer? im wondering since redhat seem like a really good distro(under gentoo because of portage and everything compiled on your on machine, but then again you could probally play with src rpms)

My personal opinion of the SYSV boot style is not very good. The dir structure is a bit of a pain. Also my big problem with RH was the rpm's.
With slak its easienough to install gcc, and remove it when I have built what I need.

No offense, but you're obviously doing something wrong. I use RH and always put / and /usr on separate partitions and have never had one problem. I also run a custom setup and it installs only what I specify.

Anyone wondering about Red Hat should use it and not take the opinions of people who can't stand it. Distros appeal to different people in different ways. Judge for yourself.
