    Slow Windoze XP Home Ed

Why would it take about 5 mins to load a saved Dragon Throne game, when it took my old computer only 30-40 seconds.

    Might RAM make a differece?
The old system had 192 megabite this new one has a faster processer (over 2x faster) ad 128 megs.

    ::Edit::
Whoops, I forgot to add that there was a bit of an increase in load time, but it automaticaly jumped way up when switching from 98SE to XP HE.

The only good thing about freezing beyond feeling in the final Nordic ski race was that I couldn't feel that tumble I did going about 30 mph, maybe more.
On the other hand, not feeling any part of my body for 30 minutes was scary, especialy for my manhood.

Windoze: XP, hate it, though its more stable than my old 98SE
    Dream: linux, mandrake, then slackware.

I think it is most likely the ram. You may want to try upgrading to at least 256 for XP.

I think too... XP works under 256MB at least, else, it's damn easy, and it really comparing to 98SE.

windoze, what kind of RAM you have? DDR? RDR? SDR?

Just want to add that yes it is the RAM I had this same exact problem. When I was running Windows 98SE on my machine with 128mb I tryed installing winxp pro and it was sluggish, so I uninstalled it. But later when I upgraded to 256mb I installed winxp pro once again the difference was very noticable as it was not as sluggish at all.

Of course its the ram. NT based systems handle ram and memory in a totally different method then 9.x operating systems, using 7 total layers. This different memory management requires you to give it more to see the same results with "non-os" appications as in 98.

    Some not so perfect results.

Memory used by Some Windows operating systems on start up.
( No start up applications and Default Installation )
    (Usage is Ram + Swap)

    Windows 95 : 30 MB
    Windows 98 : 45 MB
    Windows 2000 : 95 MB
    Windows XP : 125 MB

Now check how slow your computer will work under 128 MB ram on Windows XP.

The above Free Ram stats have been performed on my own machine by me.

I had not installed any applications just the default installation of Windows operating systems.

And one more thing Windows uses the swap file by default. That is suppose you have 256 MB ram and running on Windows 98 machine then even if machine requires only 70 MB Ram it will still use some of your Hard disk space for swap space. And I think that really reduces performance.

So better disable Virtual memory if you are not running more memory consuming applications.

That has atleast improved some performance of my machine.

Its usually better to increase the page file before you resort to disable....
