    Problems with Mandrake Linux

Recently my brother "accidently" changed the version of XFree from 4 to 3.3 and now KDE won't start, it just boots up to a shell. It just displays a list of resolutions, and it says they all fail. Then it says "Server crash: No screens could be found", then it goes back to the shell. How can I fix this?

If you're a Linux newbie, your best option is to reinstall. SSH into the box and download your files, then reinstall.

How did he "accidently" downgrade XFree?

he clicked video card configuration and changed his version of XFree from there. He said it was "accidently"

Was he root (I'm not sure if you have to be, I don't use X much)? Try reinstalling XFree via the command line. If you need more help go to the source (http://www.xfree86.org/).

I fixed it. I digged into Mandrake's message boards and found a program that comes with Mandrake called XFdrake. It is basically a shell-based graphics card configure program. I just went back to version 4.0 and BOOM! we got KDE again!

Yeah, I didn't even think about the Xconfigurator tool. That's probably the same as what you're talking about.

golfinguy: r u suggesting that I did it? I would've just left it alone. I mean it is his comp, I'm not going to go in and change his crap around unless he asks me.

PS: How do you all play your 3D games? We tried the "experimental" hardware accelerated version of XFree 3 point something something when we first installed Mandrake on his box, and it would freeze up when I try to play a 3D game. So we switched to 4.2.1 which only offers software rendering. It even runs TuxRacer very slowly. And he's got a Athlon XP 1700+ w/ 4x GeForce 2 MX 400 in it.

Download the drivers from NVIDIA to play 3D games with OpenGL. It will work fine.
