    Connection...

I recently got a cable internet connection and it seemed ok until I realized that my friend who has cable (through the same company as me) has much faster speeds. In games he will have around 100 ping when I get about 300-600 and he only lives a few miles from me...What could make the difference? And is there any way to speed up my connection?

If you're playing on the same server at the same time then it has to be something local with your modem or NIC settings...

Go to www.dslreports.com, they have a lot of tips and hacks.

Is he a few miles closer to the supplying company?

you can get differant cable speeds, does he have a faster speed than you?also, if he is on a differant node than you, yours might have more users on it, slowing it down.another thing you might consider is, older operating systems are not optimized for high speeds access, win 98 and win me is 2 of them. you can get patches for the registry that will fix that off of the internet.try searching for cable patches on google.is your router 10/100 autosencing compatable?iv seen loose or badly crimped wires cause this too.there are a lot of things too look for in this.

I thought that only mattered for DSL, not cable.

Both of those seem like pretty high pings for cable - when I play I normally get a ping of around 50, and my cable's not even that fast. I guess that might depend on the game, though.

    Still, A few miles shouldn't make a 400% difference.
Are you sure you don't share your connection, Or that something
else in the background is leeching it away?

If by "something else in the background" you mean other programs that I might be running, then no. I always shut off my non-essential programs when I play games.

Hmm...that could be the problem since I have windows 98

I'm a little nervous about downloading something that will change my registry...should I be worried about that?

Couldn't the location of the server I'm playing on make the difference? I'm not completely sure, but I know I've played on servers that are located in Europe and I'm in western United States...

i have never had any problems downloading registry patches for cable off the internet. just make sure the site looks or is reputable.and yes, if you have win 98 and havent done so, it would help it out a lot.go to somewhere like tech tv to get it, the files have been checked.

make sure you do a registry backup though before downloading patches, changing values, etc.

This siteis a pretty good forum for tweaking your broadband connection. They recommend cablenut, it isn't bad, makes value changing fairly easy. I haven't been there in a while, but there are a users on the page that are very helpful. Also, there is a user there, I believe his user name is mnosteele. He wrote a help tweak page that is quite helpful.

Anyways, remember, before doing anything, backup your registry.
