    problem with graphics card

I just put a new PCI GeForce 4 MX 440 64MB in a new computer, and it keeps giving me errors whenever I use Direct3D. Every program gives something different, but usually it is about the renderer. OpenGL works FAST though.

    Nah, Probably not.

Try updating your detonaters (<- you have those right?) to
the latest stable version, Wich is on the nvidia site. Also
update your DirectX to the latest version.

I got DX to version 8.1, which is what the driver CD came with (I already had it from WinXP) and I am using the latest detonator drivers, the same ones I used last time. I guess I'll have to try getting DX 9 or something.

It's not the card, It's a pretty good card. From Mad Dog Multimedia.

And what exactly did you try to run that used DirectX?

    DirectX Diagnostics
    Morrowind
    Passmark Performance Test
    Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight

it's not all of DX though, DirectDraw works. It's just Direct3D.

I had this problem once, And it was caused by incompatibility
between the videocard and the motherboard. Maybe you should
try a different OS? Yeah,i know, It makes no sense...

I get DX errors whenever I run a certian prog.. **cough** <kazaa> - and when I try to run a game afterwards it will crash back and give me DX errors.

I don't know, why the hell would kza be using DX and then the kicker not be kind enough to relinquinsh DX objects when done?? how inconsiderate or just bad coding.

have u tried direct3d on a game such as half life thats not so card intensive? Maybe u are demanding too much of it? Then again, my 64mb v5 never stumbled in morrowind...

A game might demand too much from a videocard but just
refusing to boot is not the way that it indicates it. Besides
    Morrowind's engine is serious $$$$

it's not that it's too demanding for the graphics card, I had a GeForce 2 in it b4 this and it ran everything fine. The problem is Direct3D is not starting up. It can't make a device for it. Here is my error from DX Diagnostics

Direct3D test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x887602eb (error code)

Nothing to do with my graphics card not being powerful enough.

did you not read my earlier post? I said I tried Jedi Knight. Jedi Knight is older than Half Life.

if the graphics card wasn't compatible with my mobo, I wouldn't be getting video at all, right?

    I got it to work!

For some reason DX was thinking I had my graphics card in PCI slot 2, and I have it in slot 1. So I uninstalled everything for my graphics card and reinstalled and it works again.

Thank you all for your help.
