    Seriously... stop posting because you are giving advice that you don't know much about.

    You don't have to use the restore CDs. download a DOS boot disk, do the partitioning and formatting yourself and then use your operating system disk to reinstall the OS. I will walk you through it if I have to because it's CAKE. Not HARD, like TravisS would lead you to believe. Using those damn restore disks will just reload all the garbage back on. You don't need 2 seperate partitions. That's garbage.

    Well, well, well, i left the comp off for a day, and waddya know, it works.

    Well, except for the minor fact that im back where i started at before i took it into compusa to fix the cd drive. The drive isnt recognized, and the cd with the Dragon Throne demo on it is inside. The drive wont open or close this time, though last time it did.

    The demo works fine, btw.

    I guess ill take it back, and have them fix it AGAIN.

    And i dont have the actual windows cd, just the restore cd.
    Isnt the partitioner that comes with mandrake a non-destructive one?

    This is only an issue with Win XP machines for HP. At least in the desktop market. All HP machines prior to XP came with a set of recovery CD's. Up to 4 CD's ith Win ME. Compaq goes back to Win ME. SOME Win ME and newer systems only come with a singe Recovery CD (requires hard-drive info to work), and not the QuickRestore CD's (no HDD required). Customers must order these QuickRestore CD's if they do not have them. This is only for the desktop market, I do not know about the laptop market.

    ROFLMAO!!!! This is my JOB! I'm a factory authorized onsite technician for a variety of brands. Compaq, HP, Sony, E-Machines, Sytemax, and a few other smaller companies. Don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about . Please go back and read the UNDERLINED words in my post. I underlined them for a reason. No, he does not have to use the automatically partioning and formatting of the CD. But I'll tell you this much. MOST Compaq QuickRestore CD's WILL NOT RUN on a user partitioned drive. This does not mean all, but a very large amount.

    So please, read people's posts a little better before you attempt to tell them to shut up .

    I'm sorry... you just sound like you don't know what you're talking about. It's not that difficult and I find it hard to believe that whole line about the restore disks not working on user-partitioned drives. I've done it on Gateway machines plenty of times.

    And I've spoken with plenty of "technicians"... half of them read from a book or a screen and the average technical person could run circles around them. Sorry for my assumptions.

    Glad to hear your PC is working again windoze victim . Just keep all of this stuff in mind for the future


    Compaq's are very different from the average PC my freind Their restore software is very touchy... you have no idea what you have to do sometime just to get the CD to run. There are so many little tricks. Like, make sure the Num Lock key is on, hit the Caps Lock key the the exact second the CD starts to boot. I've seen where the CD ROM drive itself won't let the restore run. The QuickRestore can be very, well, demanding.

    "Hrrrrm, I'm not sure about linux alongside windows. Well, it's very possible, but will take some work. " is in the context of using the QuickRestore CD's. Sorry, maybe I didn't make that clear enough.

    Gateway computers, or at least my old Gateway, as well as nearly every other PC that I've ever seen installs the OS and everything on 1 partition, and only requires that 1 partition. If we couldn't use this to our advantage, replacing 60 and 80 gig drives would suck . Do you know how long it takes for one of those to partition and format through DOS . Thanks to the ability to install on a user made partition, we use a special Dell utility that will partition and format and drive in 30 seconds or less. It's great

    I have run Linux alongside Windows many times on my own Gateway. I have run it alongside Windows on my parents HP. You can run it alongside Windows on a Compaq, but with the auto partitioning QuickRestore CD's, it won't be as easy as other computers .

    And yes, plenty of "technicians" don't need to know crap about computers. They are generally the help desk techs. A flow chart or something of the like is all they need. I'm A+ certified, have worked in a genuine computer store as a tech, and have diagnosed some problems you could hope to never see in your lifetime .

    I can't give you the link to where I got it from, but I zipped it and uploaded it to here. Just download that, unzip it to a floppy, and it should work.

    Unhappy OOPS

    Sorry about the success noted. Windoze seems to boot only once every 5 tries or so. And it still doesnt recognize the cd. I dont suppose that there is anything i can do about it other than take it back?
    Ill check for drivers on compaq's site, but I doubt that's the prob. The drive doesnt even seem to have power all of a sudden, wont open and close!
    The only good thing about freezing beyond feeling in the final Nordic ski race was that I couldn't feel that tumble I did going about 30 mph, maybe more.
    On the other hand, not feeling any part of my body for 30 minutes was scary, especialy for my manhood.

    Windoze: XP, hate it, though its more stable than my old 98SE
    Dream: linux, mandrake, then slackware.

    just occured to me, it may just be a loose cable.

    jeez, now that i think about it, i realy need esd.

    Sorry for the flaming them.. I just see a lot of people on this board giving bad advice. I'm not saying I know it all either, but I do know quite a bit, IMO.
