okay ive got an old 4.86 with a little bit of extra memory ....
when i got it win 95 was installed on it but the comp jammed everytime when it booted so
Now, which type of OS is the best for such a comp, with that i mean an OS who doesnt eats memory so i can still do something on the comp.....
i was thinking of linux version mandrake 8.0
suggestions are welcome.....
llo i want to ask something about this subject too. Does somebody know a good linux version for almost the same pc as gangly, but a version that i can install with disks only? Cause i don't get the ****ing drivers installed who are needed for my cdrom...

Yes i've tried both, dos is on the boot disk, but i can't install win 3.11 cause he says my DOS is too old...so i installed a version of dos(i always boot with a win95 boot disk), but then he sais that he couldn't do that, don't ask me why.Originally posted by Travis Dane

I've tried to install the drivers of my backpack cd-rom(parallellport) but the drivers are on drive C, and the dos version that's on my startup disk won't detect the cd-rom drive. It's just not in my Bios. How do i get it in there?
I assume he din't just say 'go fook yourself' when i couldn't
install, i had to give a hint! You could try installing Windows 3.1

Well not that i dont know the dos commands BUT well blabla...
no let me put it this way wich takes in the most CPU win 95 or win 98 because i want a OS with some basic interface but also an OS who doesnt eats memory .....

I'm sure Linux would run on that as long as you don't try to run X-Windows....if you decide to try X then I wouldn't consider GNOME or KDE a viable option. There's probably some slimmed-down distros out there to run on really old systems, just check out www.distrowatch.com or search google for one.

I'd say any version of linux, however don't expect a 486 to run a graphical interface at ALL. at least anything that was put out in the past 2 years or so. I have a P266 that had problems running Mandrake 7.2 graphically. The command line stuff should work, however, I'm doubting you'll even have a big enough HD to install a recent distro if you're running a 486.

leme just give the specs .... 66 Mhertz i think 32 Mb ram ..... or at least he detected last boot 20 Mb and it has an HD of 6 gig if im not mistaken the motherboard is still the same but i think someone gave it a second life by adding some extras
ill check out the linux slackware ...but first ill try to run mandrake (cuz thats alrdy on cd) .... ill c what im going to do with it thx anyway guys (||girls)
