    Win 98SE hangups

I have a second computer that runs win 98SE, and will not let me access folders through the interface. I'm not sure if you follow, but when I open up my computer or my documents, i have to ctrl-alt-del, and then it goes into safe mode. I try to shut off the computer, but it gets stuck at the "Windows is shutting down" screen, and i have to do a manual shut-down. When i booted it up again, I had to ctrl-alt-del because it had frozen (before mcafee or ICQ started). Something called "Cpqeadm" was "not responding". Bleh. When i tried to open my documents, it froze again, ctrl... again, went into safe mode, and shut down the computer manualy. It booted up fine again.
BTW. I can open programs through the Start menu.
The only good thing about freezing beyond feeling in the final Nordic ski race was that I couldn't feel that tumble I did going about 30 mph, maybe more.
On the other hand, not feeling any part of my body for 30 minutes was scary, especialy for my manhood.

Windoze: XP, hate it, though its more stable than my old 98SE
    Dream: linux, mandrake, then slackware.

God, dont get me started on Compaq's abysmal "costumer service", but yes, its a Compaq Presario.

Ahh, so maybe this Cpqeadm is a compaq service, what compaq-installed software do you have on the machine?

    Unhappy

Lemme see, some "compaq service connection", "compaq support"
Thats all thats obvious, since i cant get the add/remove programs window up, and the find files window just froze the friggen thing.

    Edit:
Actually, i got the computer to safe mode. Ill run full scandisk and defrag again, just to be sure.

    **** hard shutdown again

    run from start

msconfig and remove everything from startup you don't actually use/need.

And... straight into "Active Desktop Recovery"

Screw it, im going to bed, hoping tomorrows a snow day or cold day.

It's been cold here for 3 months , winter i guess

Don't seek the problem at Win98, that runs just fine on my
pc. Instead go kick the **** of the compaq-customer service.
Those pre-built computers usually come with an OS already
    installed, was that win98?

Whether it runs fine on your PC or not is not the question. There's obviously something that's a little messed up. You may try just running the 98 install again to see if that fixes it. If not, get into wherever you can and do backups and wipe the drive and start from scratch... most likely, that's what Compaq is going to tell you anyways because that's all these damn tech support people know how to do.

I think the problem is a ****ed up compaq service/program that he doens't need running, follow the msconfig suggestion and clean your startup folder of excess, we'll go from there.

How does a compaq pc differ from a normal one? exept the ugly
name on every part and the pre-build pc.

it's not specifically that it's a Compaq... all pre-fab systems come with vendor-software installed that is usually worthless and only hogs precious resources. It's best to just turn them all off unless you use them.

RoD, you're probably right, that something is getting screwed up right as he's booting up, hence something in the startup, but I suspect it's going to take more than just shutting something down in msconfig.

the only answers that Compaq has been able to give me in several years that i have had this computer is that it is either my fault because i put something like a game on that did not come with the computer, or that i needed to reformat. Actually, the first hd died within a month of having the computer. Ahh, well. Im still messing with startup.

Another virus scan may catch something (Macaffee)

I'll remember never to buy a Compaq.
