To service pack or not to service pack

For those of you who have xp pro, i was wondering if you were happier with its performance before the service pack or afterwards. I'm debating whether to download it or not, i just finished uninstalling a bunch of hotfixes cause they were causing my computer to crash up to 30 times a day, for no reason. It's a huge download (or i can pay 10 bucks and wait a month for the cd), but i do have friends with broadband so i could get it. Im just wondering if it's worth it or not. Thanks.

Included in SP1 is the Java Virtual Machine. Enough said.

Not all fixes can be applied via individual patches, some (at least one I know of) are included within SP1 only, IIRC. Unless you want to fix it yourself that is.

Service pack. It might be a big download, but im thinking (correct me if im wrong) there is a few big security fixes in it.

I downloaded and installed SP1. The only difference I have noticed is that when I go to look at my system properties it now says 'Service Pack 1' underneath 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional'. Other than that I wouldn't even know it was there.

Is it the same as the home version service pack?

If so, I got it off of a cover disc and it worked fine. There were a few big fixes etc on it.
    Such is life.

There is only one, AFAIK. Just go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and let it work itself out for you.

I dont think i'd ever learn java, because I for one, find java applets completely tacky and better suited for sites authored by kids who are just learning HTML. Although thats just my opinion, I think its right. I used prolly 12 applets/page when I was first learning HTML, and I wouldnt be surprised if the people just learning HTML are too.
