Old Laptop with unidentified hardware/software problem

My dad has an old Dell laptop that is running Windoze 95. The problem is that when he was using it as his buisiness computer, it crashed. He got all vital data back because he backed up, but when windoz was reinstalled, the games never came back, and when he tried to install his modem pc card, the first install messed up, and it also messed up. Now it thinks that there are pc cards in both slots, and refused to do anything to them. Also, I do belive there are other problems that i dont know about.

Secondary, but not vital i dont think, is that while the battery monitor in windoze shows the corret battery level, the hardware battery monitor show a complete depletion of the battery in less than ten minutes. I ran the battery down to where windoze showed 88% power left, then plugged it into the wall, when it immediatly dropped to 86% power left.

Are these problems that could fixed by loading windoz again, or with another OS?
The only good thing about freezing beyond feeling in the final Nordic ski race was that I couldn't feel that tumble I did going about 30 mph, maybe more.
On the other hand, not feeling any part of my body for 30 minutes was scary, especialy for my manhood.

Windoze: XP, hate it, though its more stable than my old 98SE
    Dream: linux, mandrake, then slackware.

the games problem is because you didnt select them to be installed during the installation, the card problem-> go into system, device manager, remove them both, restart and redo the installation. the battery problem- charge the battery forever then on the laptop somwhere there should be a reset button for the hardware meter to reset it to show full battery. that should solve it all.
