Ive never installed two versions of windows on one computer, Im not sure if it is possible, but I have done linux, and that will require you to partition you hard drive into two parts.

- This should be in the tech board.

What versions of Windows do you have? It can be tricky if you are installing say, Win NT 4.0 and Win 98 of NTFS and FAT32/16 respectively. Let me know your versions and I can probably help you.

as i read the topic i got the idea he wanted dual-display on the laptop, then i realized after reading the replies, when he said window he meant Windows...hehe, anyways. Fat16 Fat32 NTFS and linux's 3 partitions can all reside on the one hd, but itll be very difficult to set each and everything

What to do

first of you it is best to get a partitioning tool like partition magic if you want two versions of windows running on your computer. i think that fdisk will also work but it wil be hard and i have no clue on how to it using this tool

then what you you after you made the new partiotion, (make it FAT32 for windows 9x+ and FAT16 for win 3.1, NTFS will be hard to use as some of the earlier versions of windows do not support it) then u install the new windows on the newly created partition after which you either use the boot manager in windows (should work automatically, else you have a problem) or a other bootup program (partition magic comes with one that is called boot magic) to selct which windows you wanna start up in.

If you wanna dual boot Windows and Linux then the process is about the same but then i would really advice you to get partition magic or a simialar tool to create partitions on you HDD since else, unless the install program can do it automatically (like mandrake), it will be hard to get the right partitions.

i essence you do not have to create a partition to run two versions of windows it is also possible to run both on the same partition but this is quite confussing and will almost nvr work right. Therefore it is adviceble to create a new partition.

.... ok i know this is quite confussing but so is the whole process the best thing therefore is to buy a tool like partition magic and a bootup manager and then install the extra OS on the new partition.

Not sure that is possible. As mentioned, you would need two partions and a boot loader. The trouble is most versions of windows won't let you install to any but the primary partition. (first partition on the first bootable hd). At least this is true for win 95/98. I don't have experience with anything later myself.

I dual boot win95/linux but linux will install where you want it to.

I could be wrong. Anyone know for certain?

I currently have WIndows XP and WIndows 2K installed on the same HDD, not partitioned or anything. I just have a boot menu that lets me choose which to use. WIndows XP went in first. 2K next

You can probably go to your bios settings after you partition
your hdd and set the notebook to boot from whatever drive
letter you want. That would allow you to install 2 different
versions of XP.

I'm not sure whether XP booting from the same drive will allow you to install another version of XP on a different drive of the
same computer (never tried it, but sounds like a good idea).

And also, as someone pointed out you can partition your
notebook with Partition Magic and use the option for installing
an OS on that partition. Trouble is, Partition Magic is not a
toy or a simple tool to use. It can mess your brain up if you
don't know what you're doing. So if you do go the PM route,
be very careful and read the manual if you have one.
