    XP - Rebooting

    Hi,

I got XP installed after a huge mess, and now XP decides to restart my computer whenever it wants. It has done it 3 times already today. Out of nowhere, it will just reboot itself.

    Any suggestions?

    - I think ill have to reload XP

Thanks, I changed it, Ill post if it restarts by itslef again, since my other computer didnt have it checked off, and that computer doesnt restart.

Also, XP freezes on me, so that must mean something is wrong.

Well now I know why they have that automatic rebooting. I truned on that option, left the computer for a while, and when I came back a blue screen saying it shut down my computer to prevent damage from occuring.

That's really strange. But I've had computers reboot on me in the middle of doing nothing for no apparent reason. It's one of the most frustrating things...

Anyway, what are the specs of your computer. I want the niddy gritty, the CPU, memory, motherboard, etc. Tell me all the specs you know.

And how old is this computer?

Well that is cuz XP unlike 98 or 95 does not show u the blue screens if it hanged or failed.. instead it restarts.. Change the setting it should be fine.. but if the machine fails i think the machine will freez instead of a restart....

I faced this problem a year ago, when I had Win98 on my comp. I later discovered the problem was due problem with my RAM, once I replaced it, worked like a charm.

The second solution could be, REINSTALL after a clean format/partition. Win98 always has problems with it's partition (FAT32), so could XP.

I took it into the shop, and they installed XP Home, I get home use it for a while and it reboots still. Ill bring in tomorrow, and have them take a look at the ram.

Does anyone know if there are any tests I can run on the ram myself?

Did u run those steps i pm'd u on home also? Theres a built in fail safe that auto-reboots xp, leave it turned on and u can do things till your blue in the face and it won't stop, click that option off and presto, problem solved.

Well I would think the message warning telling me that my computer has been halted to prvent damage wouldnt be good to turn off, they do it for a reason.

If I just take of the rebooting option, it freezes.

Heres something I figured out. If I leave the computer while connected to the internet it will restart itself out of the blue, If Im not on the net its fine. I changed the ethernet card, and thats not the problem.

This was all fine with ME, it only happends with XP.

Its a fail safe, there nothing wrong with yer pc (99.9% sure). I have checked out every BS error i EVER got and it was always xp not liking something that didn't matter. I had this problem for 3 months when i first got xp, so i followed the steps i gave you. It lasted 11 1/2 months before i ever formatted/changed the install, and that was cuz i had some "law" trouble and had to get rid of some evidence.
