    Surely that can't be it

I get bad benchmark results. In the latest version of 3dmark I only get 6 thousand and odd. I know benchmarks arn't the be all end all of speed measurement but I feel I should get a little more umph from my PC. Could win ME be my problem, as you can see I'm not short of hardware inside my PC.

    A7V333 motherboard
AMD 2200+ (throughbred) cpu temp around 45C
    512Mb PC2100 ram
dual maxtor d740x hdd in raid 0 array
    ATI radeon 8500
    win ME ??????

I don't have lots of extra programs running and have all the latest drivers, is this win me or just me?

WinME isnt great, its big, slow and looks like it was designed by a colour blind 4 year oldwho watches to much cartoon network.
What is the benchmark result based on, and how are the points awarded to each factor - the benchmark doesnt show a great deal as long as the machine copes with everything you need to do are you really going to notice a little misassigned memory and30 or 40 processor cycles?
the benchmark osftware also varies in quliaty so it depends which aplication you are using.

if your test looks for the speed that apps load...then ME is definetly your problem, try a fast secure OS like win2000 or say unix/linux...that would be a better test.

WinME should not be reducing 3DMark performance, period.

How about some unchecked BIOS settings, or possible hardware malfunction/failure.

When my ole' P3-800 died on me, it worked fine, or so it seemed. When it "kicked the bucket" the on-chip multiplier kept coming up as 2x (even though they are locked for Intel chips) And so I was running @ 300mhz, though it reported 800mhz.

it's all relative depending on what he's testing...i know the people over at pcworld magazine do bench tests by testing how fast applications load...in which case windows me would affect the test

Who the hell shops at PCworld-worst shop ever.

Anyway, 3DMark is not affected by Windows ME.

6k is not a lot. Usually the driver for your v card that is the prob.

I get lots more marks from AMD 1900XP, geoforce 4,less RAM and slower board. I do get new drivers ASAP,even Beta ones.

Dont blame the god damn windows-although even I swapped to XP.

Actually, 3DMark results around 6K are reasonable-- it depends on what options are set-- are you running at 640x480 or 1600x1200? Are you using anti-aliasing or triple buffering?

Remember 3DMark doesn't benchmark your processor-- the processor has virtually nothing to do with it-- instead 3DMark benchmarks your GPU.

the objective is to go largest screen you can stand (1600x1200), maximum pixel depth, maximum buffering, zdepth, and maximum anti-aliasing (3 or 4 levels)... in other words, MAXIMUM everything. I'd be surprised if anyone gets anywhere near 10K in truth.

    Be honest...

Honestly... I don't know which settings I was running it at. I used all the default settings (to the best of my knowledge). I know my Radeon 8500 isn't cutting edge anymore but its definatly not past it. Thats something I'll check when I get home, FSAA and AF are on sliders so I'll check where I had them set to and run again. Thanks for all the replys.
