    Unhappy Problems with DVD-ROM

    'lo everybody,

I'm having problems in which every time I put a cd in the drive, the busy light comes on, and then stays on, until the program stops responding and Windows crashes. Any ideas as to why? As I quite need my DVD drive...

I've already checked the IDE cable, various drivers, IDE bus control, but with no luck. It'll only play CD/DVD's if they're in the drive when I turn the pc on, and since I need to change CDs to install a game it's a bit of a bugger really.

I'm using Windows XP, and the drive is a Samsung DVD drive.

    Thanks for any help.

whoa, i was just about to post something similar to this. Yesterday I bought a samsung burnrner. Installed it and then it wouldnt play any cd's that i put into it. Now my Dvd drive is messing up and wont recognize anything just like your DVD drive wont but unlike you my DVD drive is a Creative labs drive. Im not at home right now to mess around but Im now going to take a guess and say that its something messed up with samsun WinXP support. Have you downloaded a new driver other than the default one windows comes with? Im going to try that when i get home. Also do you have a second DVD/CD... drive? If so is it the master or the slave? I have my burner set to slave so im going to see if switching it to master would help. I have already looked at all the cables and they are all pluged in correctly but still no luck. Another thing you could try is downloading a new firmware upgrade from samnsungs website and see if that helps, all I can say is that I spend all last night trying to get it to work so I could play some games but nope both drives wouldnt read anything i put into them, they would just have the light come on and keep spinning the cds..

A quick look on microsofts windows catalog shows that my drive isnt listed yet for XP, either its too new or just isnt supported wtf You would think that a brand name drive would work on XP, I suggest you take a look and see if yours is supported, I guess this means im taking the damn thing back to the store tonight

I don't ully understand, do you mean to say you lost auto starting on this drive? If so make sure your auto insert notification is on...

Well, for those that cared about my original problem (which you probably doin't now.. lives to lead, etc) apparently it was caused by downloading XP service pack 1, and being disconnected from the net mid-way through the installation, ended up with a LSASS.EXE error, couldn't log onto to XP at all...

One formated hard drive and a reinstall later, I'm happy....

Just wish I'd saved my code onto something other than the hard drive... I've lost quite a bit....

    Stupid stupid stupid stupid.....
