Imagine it as a bit system database....stores settings for the system and the applications

When you click on a doc file, how does it know to open it with word? - registry
How does a system know its host name? - registry

There's a rather good book called Windows Registry in 24 hours (and suprisingly it is good for a 24 hours book)

I dont know if its still published......but its a good start....

Imagine the registry literally as the spinal cord for your computer and the operating system.

You mess with that unstable thing at your own peril.

I warn you now-- back up everything you don't want to lose, and in fact, use regedit to make a copy of your registry before you fool with it and save it in the root of your C:\ drive you so can access it with an emergency boot disk.
