Shouldn't this be in the tech board?
What's your setup? Hub? Switch? Crossover cable?

Uhh I guess so, I'm sorry if it's not in the corerct forum...

I have a hub and I have xp and my friend has windows ME and I'm not sure how to set up the network. Whenever i changed the dns on the network card my dsl doesn't work so I'm not sure if I even need it.

so far I have my network card specifying an ip and my friend's computer is on obtain an ip automatically...I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, does the ip have to be a special number?

Well for the internet to work, I put my dsl cable into the uplink connection on the hub, and had to turn a switch for that to work, after that the internet should just work.

Second, if you want to network them, run a network wizard on the XP, and set it up correctly, make the disk and then use it on the ME machine.

    That should fix it.

OKay I've heard about making the disk...can you tell me exactly what steps to take to get it to work? I'll try fiddling with it by myself until then

does DSL allow multible IP adresses?
Cable just changed it so they don't give out multiples.

I dont have XP in front of me, so I cant tell you exactly what to do, because we did at my friends house.

In control panel, there should be something called Network places. There you should add a new network (you have to create something new). From there a wizard will pop up, and just check the appropriate check marks, according to you setup.

Then put the disk in the second computer, run the file, and it will setup that one too.

Just make sure the internet works on once computer through the hub, before you do the netowrking.

yes, because dsl comes with a router attached, and that's what
takes the dynamic ip your internet provider gives you and
apportions it statically over your home lan.

Cable modems don't come with routers ( at least I've never
seen one that does) and so in order for you to connect
multiple computers to it, you have to buy or steal a cable
router and hook one side to your modem and the other to
    your local network.

I have cable, a router, and six computers hooked into it.
There's no lag time at all bringing up web pages or sharing
    files over the local net.
