    Virus in Flash Drive?

    Hi!

A friend of mine having this issue of not able to format or read a flash drive (Windows). She had tried 3rd party tools and other laptops, with the same problem. When tried to repair the drive with MalvaStyle, it outputs: "Compatibility Test Failed" and "Disk repair failed. Read/Write access denied.". Also, she says that when the flash drive is inserted to a computer, it seems like some files are automatically copying. What i suspect is that it might be a virus inside the drive. Does anyone had any issue like this?

    Thanks for any input

What do the scans of various scanning tools tell you?

Which version of windows? Make sure any kind of "autorun" is disabled for removable media.

Boot a simple Linux "LiveCD" - ideally one which doesn't automount inserted media.
Examine the drive using a sector editor.
Mount the drive; this being Linux, it shouldn't try to autorun anything. Make sure that some file manager doesn't get run in response to a drive being mounted (which would cause a lot of disk reads).
Examine the files on the mounted drive; autorun.inf is a good place to start.

Or it could just be a broken drive that's past the end of it's useful life. All things decay eventually.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

I think the flash drive is only about 1 year old, and the tools just spits out something similar to "Disk repair failed. Read/Write access denied.". OS is Windows 7. I'll tell her to check it with an sector analyzer, and possibly try it on Linux. Thanks for the reply salem. I'll get back after i hear some more info on it.
