What is so destructive about saving your money and using 32bit versions of Windows XP because it is what you have? I see people keep upgrading from XP, to Vista, to 7, to 8, 8.1, and now 10 and spending money left and right. Well I have to be frugal. I don't want to be in my old years and wishing I never made all those purchases and living out of the trash so to speak! Anyways if you really want stable use 32bit XP where all the softwares were originally made for. Then dual boot to one of your other latest and greastest systems so you can keep up with the times. I see my parents are stuck in the stone ages and yet they still raised me and my two sisters up by their hard work not by buying the latest and the greatest all the time!!!

Most people have a job so they can afford to buy new operating systems and computer parts routinely, and save for retirement at the same time. It's true that living as an elderly person is tough if you don't have a career to retire from.
Well I have to be frugal.
If you worked you would have actual money to be frugal with.

Perhaps that's why you should work on fostering an actual skill and do some worthwhile programming with any of several modern compilers instead of being on here.

I have finally cleared my BOINC jobs list. I then put the 64bit Win 8.1 disk in the CD drive, (or DVD - don't remember which it is), and booted the system. It came up exactly as it had done. How can I force the system to boot from the CD?

Like you, I would expect the system to boot from the CD, but did you try selecting the boot medium manually by pressing the appropriate key during bootup?

Doesn't ask, I can hear the CD drive starting up, but the system is up and running before it has a chance to do anything, (SSD "disk").

Usually it's F12 to bring up the boot menu, otherwise check your boot order in the BIOS (usually F1, F2, or DEL to get into the BIOS setup)

If your computer is anything like mine, you will literally have 2 seconds to smash
F2 to get to the BIOS settings. God I really miss earlier versions of Windows and
DOS when it actually showed you on the screen which key was BIOS and Safe Mode
    etc.

Shuffled the boot order in the BIOS and booted the CD. A little odd I had to do this, but anyway. I don't think it acheived anything though. Booted up, did a few things, then told me to take the CD out and restart the system. Doing so took me back to the normal start page and Belarc reports I am still running Windows 10.
swgh: Yes, I agree, it doesn't give you a lot of breating space does it.
