I'll be honest, if I controlled the TLDs I would grow a Hitler 'tash and mandate that non-profits *only* can use .org, ISPs .net, etc.
To me, it's useful to have that kind of information available in the name, like the difference in the street between a commercial enterprise (large windows, extensive signage) and a charity (in many cases a converted house). You don't have to go into these places to have an idea what kind of business they are.
