Why do so many websites have the top level domain .com?

Many websites that have nothing to do with making money use .com, isn't this wrong because they're not commericial?

It is the de facto default top level domain.

I get maybe two dozen requests for help with some sort of programming or design problem every day. Most have more sense than to send me hundreds of lines of code. If they do, I ask them to find the smallest example that exhibits the problem and send me that. Mostly, they then find the error themselves. "Finding the smallest program that demonstrates the error" is a powerful debugging tool.

Its also passed into common parlance for the internet age: ".com bubble", the host of companies that use .com as part of their trading name.

I'll be honest, if I controlled the TLDs I would grow a Hitler 'tash and mandate that non-profits *only* can use .org, ISPs .net, etc.
To me, it's useful to have that kind of information available in the name, like the difference in the street between a commercial enterprise (large windows, extensive signage) and a charity (in many cases a converted house). You don't have to go into these places to have an idea what kind of business they are.
