Exchange 2003 Customize Friendly Name on Sent Emails

I want to be able to set the friendly name on emails that I send programmatically through my Exchange 2003 server. I don't want to mask the email address, just have the ability to set the friendly name on a per-message basis using the "From:" header field or some other means if possible. is this something that I can do without directly talking to AD on the exchange server?

How are you sending it? CDO? Raw SMTP info?

Raw SMTP. the machine that's sending the emails is linux, so CDO is probably not an option.
