    Windows 7 RC to Windows 7

    So, I've been beta testing Win7 for quite some while and I love it, still I've been pondering about something and I can't remember my login for the Win7 forums, so I'll ask here, will Win7 RC users be able to purchease the Upgrade version of Win7 ?
    Thanks in advance

    Hmmm. I suppose you can.
    There was a post on the windows blog some while ago. You can't upgrade directly, but you can hack the installation files to make it possible to upgrade,

    Then since you can get the RC for free, who will buy the full version?

    You wouldn't until the RC expires which is supposed to be August 2010, I believe. It also shuts down automatically after two hours in May 2010.

    That said... you can probably "hack" that in the same manner that you would "hack" the upgrade as Elysia said... but, of course, if you're going to break the law, anyway, I might as well suggest that you could probably download a full version of Windows 7 somewhere online if you wanted.

    My opinion is don't break the law at all and wait for someone to give a more correct response (which I don't have).

    The RC is build 7100 I think. The RTM is 7600. I suspect that by August 2010 no more windows updates or services packs can be installed on the RC as they may check small but important things as the build version of the host OS.

    It's not illegal to make it possible to upgrade the RC. Microsoft has stated how on their blog.
    You can also run Windows 7 for 120 days without a valid key. Legally. Microsoft has also stated this.
    Cracking the RC to run after the expiration date is most likely illegal.
    For universities that use the MSDNAA deal, you can get Win7 for free.

    I know about the second statement, but I didn't hear about the first... wouldn't it have been easier to enlighten us of this fact in the first place?

    That said... as you say further in the post, technology students have a million ways to get Windows 7 for free or close to free. I think Microsoft has done pretty good in this regard to help students stay up to date. If you aren't a student, I still think I've seen some pretty serious discounts available for Windows 7. If I can find them again, I'll post them.

    Originally, the upgrade technique was from beta version of Win7 to RC version, but nothing stops you from upgrading to RTM from RC or Beta, I guess. No one has ever said anything about that, but when you think about it, I suppose it can be done.

    Not necessarily...

    When I heard about what you're talking about... the way Microsoft went about responding to it was "Ooops... yeah we made a mistake that people can take advantage of... we can't really do anything about it, so you're all free to take advantage of it." However, that's not to say that they wouldn't have fixed the problem in future versions... I have no idea what kind of changes they made to the RTM that could have possible circumvented that error.

    I hope you're correct and they didn't do anything and they are still cool with it because it will save me a lot of money... but I'm just not quite sure I should be counting my chickens just yet. Unless you happen to know they didn't make a fix for the RTM.

    I cannot tell you for sure it's there, but I'll tell you what. I'll install the RC in a virtual machine and upgrade it to RTM. Then we'll have our answers.

    For those interested in knowing what's going on, here's a status update:
    Configured virtual machine... OK.
    Installing Windows 7 RC (x86)... OK.
    Installing Windows 7 Professional (x86)... failure (I have too little free space).

    It seems to work, but I don't have the free space to attempt it now.
    You're going to have to downgrade from Ultimate to whatever upgrade edition you purchase, however.
    I cannot guarantee the OS will continue to function as normal either, of course, so do backups if you want to attempt it.
    If anyone is interested in how to downgrade, I can provide that information, too.

    Can I please shake everyone's hand here who chooses to purchase software rather than pirate it?

    I'm not exactly a fan of Microsoft, but as somebody who makes a living writing software I appreciate people respecting copyright law (defective as it may be in its current state)
    Code:
    //try
    //{
    	if (a) do { f( b); } while(1);
    	else   do { f(!b); } while(1);
    //}

    I do ALWAYS try to buy stuff I like, if it's within my budget of course... If piracy didn't exist, maybe console wouldn't cost deadly much and yeah, all software prices would be lower
