Thumbs down Windows Vista SP2 and no sound...

All of a sudden, I've lost sound from the front jacks of my computer. But here's the odd thing, it works with the ones on the back. The front is definitely connected properly because there are USB ports on the same device and they work fine. The only thing I did of significance when it happened was I installed Vista 32 service pack 2.

I have tried reinstalling the driver, resetting the settings but neither has worked. Google just told me everything I don't need to know. Anyone else got any suggestions?

    Cheers.

Are there any yellow ! in device manager?

Do they have separate volume controls? Perhaps they've been muted.

Are they auto-sensing, and it thinks they're supposed to be a microphone rather than a headphone?

On the chance that it is a coincidence involving hardware, I have to say that the front audio jacks and the front usb jacks are not the same set of connections. Also, unless you are using the on-board audio, those front jacks have a little lead that plugs into the sound card. Of course, examining that does not mean the wires, etc, are okay inside, but my point is made.

    Have you tried rebooting?
I have a similar problem sometimes when I wake my system from Sleep mode. Sometimes I have no sound or sometimes I lose my DVD drive. The only way I found to fix it is to reboot.

Well things have gotten worse. I was fiddling around with the drivers and stuff and now I don't have sound at the back either.

I searched the Device Manager and apparently everything is fine. I've fiddled with every volume and mute control there is (I think) with no luck. I have rebooted several times like this. When I plug in something into the rear sockets, it comes up asking what I just plugged in and I say the rear speaker. I've tried other things but it doesn't get me anywhere.

Thanks for the ideas, got any more?

You could search for updated drivers and see if that helps.
Other than that, all I can think of are uninstalling SP2.

Dump a pint of beer over the top of the unit. Or go linux. You don't even know what driver hell is yet But as a programmer, you will have more of an opportunity to fix it.
