    Childrens' operating environment?

I wonder, does an operating environment, specifically designed for kids exist?

Yes by all means they could be, but that's not what he's asking.

Research Machines sell PC's to first year education (4-year olds) here in the UK. I'm not entirely sure how they go about making them user-friendly for kids, but I'm sure they do some things - probably more on the application level than the OS level.

The institute that holds the UI Design course at my university designs an environment for pre-school children. I have no idea about its public availability, though.

I do believe there are a few operating systems (or at least modified distributions) geared towards children. The most prominent of which being Edubuntu. Back in the early 90s there was a desktop environment called KidDesk which I actually remember playing around with on a school computer when I was seven or so.

When I was 5 years old I used Norton Commander. A blueish memory I shall never forget.
