Swapping for XP on dual core...

Continuing my succession of stupid questions:

I'm thinking of buying myself a new 'core 2 duo' laptop with Vista (...wow...).
I was then planning on getting rid and uploading XP and Linux.

But now I'm afraid XP wont give me the best out of my laptop.
I'm aware I would have to update XP with the hardware drivers myself but would the processors still have full functionality...?

    Yeap. XP supports multi-core processors.

I run XP + Linux myself, works great.

Be aware about driver issues. I switched from Vista to XP for about 3 weeks and got everything working except my wireless internet driver....what a useful laptop.

Most hardware manufacturers are still supporting XP. It's extremely rare if you get a component that doesn't have an XP driver. It's suppose to remain this way until mid-2009 according to recent news.

A word of advice, though... try Vista for a while before you decide to swap it for XP. Since SP1, most of the bugs have been removed and functionally, it's just about as good as XP. You might like the new interface, better, though.

Vista is extremely resource hungry. It requires at least an extra GB of ram to run smoothly. But if you do have the extra ram, then sure, Vista works fine mostly, so long as there are proper drivers.
If you are not afraid of betas, you can upgrade to Windows 7 Beta once it comes out soon. It is a much better version of Vista.

Window 7 is the sequel to Vista. Desktop OS, as well as for laptops/netbooks.
It supports touch, as well, though.

:: But, in my experience, my laptop will have a longer battery life with Vista.

You'll need to install multiple XPs into your computer, to get it works well.
Not all software are compatible to XP with SPx.

For instance, Houdini(graphics software) will works well in SP3, its window will be laggy in SP1/SP2.

And LightWave Studio 8.0 will works good in SP2 not SP1/SP3.

Microsoft Office 97 xD can't be installed on SP1/2/3. Yes, it can, with no SP installed of course.

Or use Virtual Machine instead of swapping your Windowses.

Support for multi-CPUs (and thus multi-core CPUs -- in a way) was adopted in 1998 as a part of the POSIX standard. So don't worry about that.

Then you will love how much more life Windows 7 will give.

Does POSIX standards apply for systems other than *NIX then?

What about the minimum hardware requirements?Have they increased it or decreased it this time?

Are you sure about that Elysia? I think Windows 7 is just modified XP.

I had the impression that it is more like a modified, or "fixed", Vista, since it supposedly will not introduce the kind of compatibility problems that Vista introduced.

I had the exact same problem in reverse. The OS isnt at fault, its the manufacturer for eithe rnot supporting XP or not supporting Vista. If you realyl want problems, switch to 64 bit, a Linksys engineer told me about 6 months ago that they dotn plan to support 64 bit in the forseeable future, but that may have changed, seeign as how the foreseeable future for most companies is only about 3 weeks.

    Or not supporting Linux. T_T

If you had terrible problems with drivers, just switch to Mac xD they are built in.
