Wouldn't that be cool is somebody took the 3d technology from movies (like Journey to the Center of the Earth) and used it to make a 3d gui for an operating system? Imagine 20 years in the future: Linux 3d! Well, at least not Windows 3d...

Usually you want to increase productivity, something that a 3D GUI doesn't tend to do.
Do you get what I mean? I believe you are thinking of like a 3d rendered scene. What I'm talking about is like where you where 3d glasses and the screen appears to pop out.

Well you're no fun. I never meant for this to be some huge enterprise system. Maybe a casual user could just use it for fun. Personally, I think seeing a 3d(glasses) game would be REALLY cool. I'm sure at one point somebody said the same thing about gui's.
Cool != productive, or even usable. Sure, the Jurassic Park 3d file browser looks cool (for the time), but it takes the girl about a minute to just navigate a few directory hierarchy levels.

I'm more of a fan of the virtual reality simulators as a 3D OS. Like in Disclosure (and Hackers), BUT attach it to your brain so you can send signals and do everything you want instantly - no mouse, no keyboard, no digital gloves (optional). That is a 3D environment I would enjoy. In those movies they required the digital gloves and platform to get anything done.

EDIT: Just a reminder... I seem to remember something about prolonged usage of 3D glasses to not be a good thing. Can't remember the times, but I retained 5 minutes to be the advised maximum and a 10 minutes break.

Your eyes see a 2D projection of the real world (onto the retina in your eyes) so no matter how advanced VR stuff you use it would be no more than an illusion, and thus similar to watching a flat screen. You might get a better perception of depth, but it's still an illusion.

We have stereoscopic perception. Between the 2d images of our two eyes, the brain generates a 3d image.
If technology can project different images on the two retinas, then this is no different from our normal 3d perception.

Such 3D that flies around has been done and can be seen without those really weird looking glasses :P Check out the Gorillaz and Madonna live thing :P And some German (I think) project, that has a cube flying in the air
But... Implementing that to a PC, is like running 50 Crysis processes on the best of graphics, while havn't a Vista x10 - 100 OS (Without bug improves or any good improves at all), I'd guess

Shutter glasses were supported by quite a few games in the short period that they were thought a good idea. It's just twice the work, nothing more. And they do produce a real 3d effect.
