laserjet 6L won't print

The LaserJet 6L printer in properly hooked up, plugged in, running, driver installed, you name it. It even prints the test page with no problem.
But when I try to start a print job (say, like in Notepad), it seems to successfully spool, but the printer itself does nothing at all, not a peep. No errors or anything. I read that this printer doesn't work in networking mode in XP and Vista, but disabling the bidirectional communication in the printer settings makes no effect. Anyone know what might be up?

Also, when I have the "Active Printing Jobs" window open, I see that the print job comes up in the list box as Spooling, but disappears after 1 second.

But disabling spooling doesn't help, it just says Printing instead of Spooling and still disappears.
