    Starting an online forum

What kind of resources do you need to start your own online forum? I tried godaddy.com and thought about purchasing enough storage space for ~1000 email accounts, but I'm not sure if this the most straightforward or cost-effective solution.

I'll have access to a machine with 6.6 GHz speed, 4 GB RAM, and 2x 320 GB storage in a few days...is this enough to have the machine act as a server?

Any help you could provide would be great!

One day I just searched for "free forums" and found one for starters.
    7. It is easier to write an incorrect program than understand a correct one.
    40. There are two ways to write error-free programs; only the third one works.*

    Thanks!

I already have the software (and the domain), but have no idea about where to put everything. We're getting a new machine soon, and I was wondering if that could act as the server (see above)....

That is much more than adequate. I would probably take 2GB of that RAM and one of those disks and put it somewhere else like your gaming machine.

As for how to setup the forums, well... you have to choose one and read the instructions.

Didn't know they made 6.6 GHz processors, or are you doing 1.67 GHz quad core, it doesnt work like that. As a general rule each additional processor only contributes 85% of the previous processor. So a quad 1.67 would be 5.3 Ghz equivelant. There are also other thigns to consider, primarily memory speed. My single core 3.2 GHz P4 running with 1066 MHz ram will pwn your quad core2 running 533 on most real world applications.
Until you can build a working general purpose reprogrammable computer out of basic components from radio shack, you are not fit to call yourself a programmer in my presence. This is cwhizard, signing off.
