That sounds like bad management. You need to setup a DTS package on their server to do the update. I wouldn't bother doing that from PHP if I were you.
I still don't understand why you "have" to connect to an SQL2000 server, unless the server is hosted by the company you're doing the work for. In that case, you just need a host that will hook you...
