Call of Duty 4 works. I only play games in Windows... so... :).
Better than XP, yes. I never said otherwise :).
On Vista the situation is improved by the VirtualStore thing (if I understood correctly, it transparently redirects writes to system folders to a user folder using copy-on-write). On XP many...
Hmm. I stand corrected then. Learned something here.
I guess, as said above, the real problem comes from the fact that Windows practically requires running as admin, whereas it's conventional for...
I am not sure how Windows is organized, but I meant everything, including the UI frontends.
True. Not saying Microsoft's job is easy :).
Well, my point is, the whole Windows codebase is security-critical, whereas in Linux, only the core is.
That makes Microsoft's job a lot harder, and their OS more insecure (more buggy) as a result.
It's not, but I meant the WHOLE Windows codebase. The security layers are not as strict in Windows, and UIs are allowed to do low level stuff. That makes bugs in the UIs potential security holes,...
It's an exaggeration...
The Linux kernel is orders of magnitude smaller than the whole Windows codebase.
What I meant is, it's certainly easier to maintain 5000 lines of code vs 5 million lines of code. As a result, the 5000 lines of code will be more bug-free, given the same amount of man-hour/effort...
Sorry I have to disagree.
The trick lies in "as long as the OS interface is bug-free".
It's like saying, if Windows is bug-free, no program can crash it.
Sure, it is unrealistic. Nothing can...
Of course CLI and GUI are both UIs, so I guess my explanation was not good. What I was trying to say is the strict layers, where the kernel would expose its functions through a simple interface...
No I can't. There are too many things I can do in UI that I can't do directly (command line), but that is probably just due to my lack of knowledge. As you can see, I am not familiar with Windows at...
I like the nice core and UI separation in Linux. All the UI stuff are just graphical wrappers around lower level stuff (eg, gksudo for sudo, iptables has several GUI frontends, file permissions can...
That I agree is just funny. Apparently Microsoft thinks Windows knows better than its users.
Ah of course. I made the reply just in case you are like me and only read the first page of long threads :). No offense intended.
Nice information indeed. Learned something :).
Hmm thanks for the suggestion, but we have long established that is not the problem :).
That I agree. It's the price one has to pay for having a secure system. If Linux is to be as easy as Windows, Microsoft will be out of business in no time :). It has every other advantage - price,...
Well... a newb that messes with system files... you can kill any OS that way
on Windows it's both network security and system integrity :). If you go around changing random settings in Windows...
Thanks for the detailed breakdown.
I am no way knowledgeable with Linux. I am just a user. Not even a "power user" at that.
I am just comparing Windows to Linux. Windows requires knowledge to...
That's what I meant. The default is not safe. With so many unsafe default settings, one needs to be very experienced/knowledgeable with it to make it secure.
The formatting was just a random...
I have openly admitted my lack of skill with Windows, which made my Windows insecure.
What I was trying to say is, we need skill and effort to make Windows secure, and any Linux newbie can already...
Hmm. Ubuntu installation takes ~ half an hour on my machine. I spend an additional hour or so installing programs I need. I don't need to consciously do anything to improve security.
On Windows,...

I guess someone will have to write a good AI first that can distinguish between strange and normal activities (by human definitions). This is starting to sound a lot like Hollywood :).
