A few hints could also be helpful. Some clearly visible text on the new thread page reminding everyone of code tags and probably also move the two tag buttons to a more prominent position.

I wouldn't mind a fixed style even if it didn't reflect mine. Some forums actually have that, don't they?

Absolutely. I'm actually quiet surprised it was removed. Although it did have the nagging side effect of forcing one to place code tags before switching to the advanced edit box. But that's peanuts....
