update: found the culprit. VC2005 sets the compiler to use unicode by default. Turn that to "not set" in the compiler options and it will use regular 8 bit characters (as are used pretty much in...
Visual C++ 6 doesn't implement the ISO standard at all correctly (something like 60% I believe?).
