I, for one, am happy you couldn't.
Nothing personal, really. I just find animated avatars disturbing. Nothing more.
If for some reason they stopped allowing it, don't be sad a few have them and you do not. As in any good democracy, some are just more equal than others.
It's kind of a grandfather rule situation... Unfortunately, if you missed the boat, it likely won't be coming around again.
However, like Mario, some people despise them. However, I do find it humorous that Mario finds my dancing milk carton distrubing whilst he totes around his avatar which appears to be an angry blind-folded baby person that is praying in the darkness... maybe I just have bad eyes, though. It still gives me nightmares.
The admin disabled the average user's ability to set animated avatars a long while ago.
If you ask a mod, (s)he might do it for you; but I doubt it. If you noticed, Prelude's avatar is both animated and larger than maximum size. (it's not right)
I agree that Mario's avatar is disturbing. Even said so as q.
Yeah! but we can't do anything. They are the admins and moderators. We got to be satisfied with small 55x55 pixel pics not greater than 19.5Kb :/Quote:

Being a moderator or admin gives you special privileges ;)
It's even more disturbing if I tell you from where it is. It's a shameful slice-copy-paste from a stop-motion movies based on Poe's the Pit and the Pendulum. I'm a fan of stop-motion and of Poe. Rest assured I have no empathy for the character. Just found the image cool.
Meanwhile I don't find yours too disturbing actually. It's kinda cute the little bugger. Original work?
I think a better word is distracting. Not disturbing. My english betrays me sometimes.
I feel animated avatars to be distracting most of the time. I honesty, however, can't complain of any avatar I've seen so far on these forums.
Let's have a Hottest Avatar Contest!*
I will be the judge.
*Note: Admins and moderators CANNOT participate, Unless they give us the freedom to have animated Avatars of the same size as they have!
>I tried to upload a .gif image but it says i kan't upload an animated avatar ?
cprog used to allow animated avatars, but that rule changed. However, those who already had an animated avatar at the time of the change were allowed to keep it.
>Prelude's avatar is both animated and larger than maximum size. (it's not right)
It makes me stand out, doesn't it? ;)
>How I miss the prelude's animated avatar she had in time I was just coming this board...
The blue crystal ball? I liked that one too.
Ok, moderators with 55x55 pixel avatar are allowed now. Prelude, wanna participate ?
and why do you get to be the judge?
>> So I am not participating to make this contest "fair".
Sorry, but your avatar is way not-hot. (not everyone here is female)
>> Don't feed the trolls.
:D
If animated avatars where allowed (but still within the 55x55 limit) I could very well win.
Personaly, I think the submitters should have their avatars lined up, and anyone who wants to is allowed to poll them. That way the "judging" becomes judging.
yes I knew something is creepy with my head.and you gave it the right name--"troll". thanks.
I always try to avoid speaking ridiculous things, but somehow, I just type it in. I am leaving this nonsense I have done right here and getting back to serious programming now. I will never post anything in General Discussion ever.
But don't just ignore me in C/C++ forums, just because I am a creepy creature. I do need your answers there.
Sorry for every ridiculous alphabet posted by me, it won't happen again. :(
I don't ignore people who needs help.
But you're making yourself look ridiculous by posting things as
And proclaiming yourself as the judge.Quote:

Perhaps you should try to ponder about what you're about to reply?
Calm down, people. No need to get too agitated about animated avatars.
>No need to get too agitated about animated avatars.
Whatever. I want to see a throw down! ;)
>Joking, right?
Nope, I could only guess which one you meant. The crystal ball is my favorite, as it was my first avatar here and I made it myself from scratch.
As in the current one, the one which looks like a marble?Quote:

You have the ability to distiguish a marble from a crystal ball? Anyway, as much as I love a good cat fight, I would agree that people are getting out of hand. So, I'll just leave this bottle of chill pills out and anyone who wants one can feel free to take it. There is a water cooler in the hallway.
crystal balls are... i don't know, more transparent?
Regardless that's my prelude's favorite too. Altough for some reason I can't understand, my favorite avatar is Magos' one
What wrong with what he said? Its only a silly little joke. You take stuff way too seriously :pQuote:

That makes me wonder.... Maybe you actually believe that youre the 'Goddess of the Sky' o_O
I'm trying to think. I don't think we have a non-goddess female on the board?
Code Goddess
Goddess of the Sky
I can tell you one of them has read the tao
edit: And understood it
If any animated avatar could be called "disturbing", it would surely be mine. I haven't had any comments about it, though. Well, besides one comment that "Aha! Your avatar can read the board users' minds!", or something to that affect, and a few about hypnosis. ;) They were all (as far as I could tell) positive comments, however, or (in the case of the first quote), amazement and admiration at my skills in determining the cause of problems . . . certainly not comments about my modesty. :D
In case anyone's wondering: when I uploaded my avatar, I had approximately 800 posts. I'm not sure how long animated avatars have been disabled for, but I think it's been quite some time. (This isn't the first thread about the topic.)
[edit] Note: my avatar isn't meant to be disturbing or hypnotising or anything. I was just playing around with the Gimp's spiral gradient flood-fill, and really liked the pattern. I generated a few images by hand, stuck them together, and there you have it.
Notice that my avatar is a litle jerky? Well, that's because I calculated the rotation values by hand, and I only had pixel precision. Later on, I created a program to rotate the image smoothly, but I never got around to uploading it, and by the time I did, it was too late -- animated avatars were disabled. [/edit]
This is the internet, there are no such things as "girls"...
*insert funny internet meme*
Edit: hehe

IT'S A TRAP!
Then the question becomes: why was animated avatars banned?
Yup. Can you imagine a thread full of animated avatars?
Not a problem to me.
and?
Sly's avatar is the best on the forum, I think, with mine in a close second!
I won't comment on that, but -- Salem's avatar has to be the best programming-related one.
This could take a while...
>> If animated avatars aren't allowed, then they aren't, period.
I seem to remember Prelude mentioning that she hacked one in before, but that might either be because of her mad skillz or her mod-ship.
If gifs annoy people, why should stationary be any different? Ergo disable avatars.
Naturally there must be something that distinguishes both that makes one acceptable and the other not.
If animated gifs were allowed starting today, I wouldn't be complaining. I'm not fundamentalist about it. Just find them distracting. Particularly on a forum of this nature in which I prefer to pay more attention to what is being written then having my eyes constantly trying to drift towards the source of movement in the browser window.
The decision was made for some reason and I bet that it had nothing to do with my feelings about it, but instead because of space and loading time considerations, which are far more important.
As for disabling avatars altogether. I'd vote yes on the spot.
>> As for disabling avatars altogether. I'd vote yes on the spot.
Somewhat ironic then that you have an avatar, huh?
I'm only pulling your leg, Mario.
There is a disable avatar option, I believe. User CP - options - Thread Display Options - Visible Post Elements - Show Avatars (and even Images if that's what you're into).
> As for disabling avatars altogether. I'd vote yes on the spot.
TL;DR: I don't see a reason to be Nazi Germany about it. People will want avatars or choose to not have them.
To go on about it...
We do have a community, and some people want to have avatars. Members of the community are way different from the question askers because they don't spend enough time here to get picture priveleges in the first place. But you knew that.
But part of the reason people like avatars is cause they can personalize their "space." Prelude likes anime a lot so she has an avatar like that a lot of the time. I really think it's about joining and getting to know the community. Just like people who signed up to join the community put some thought into their names. Sometimes people take it to the ultimate extreme and it becomes a default internet handle.
Yes -- I never really thought about it, but all of those avatars take up a lot of space. Checking a few random pages here seems to indicate that approximately one member in 15 has an avatar. As the maximum size of an avatar is 19.5KB, and there are approximately 30,000 users, that adds up to about 39MB. (Of course, with static avatars, I should think that very few of those static avatars are 19.5KB in size, but still, that's quite a lot of space.)Quote:

And there is the bandwidth and transfer rates. As a 28.8KB dialup user, I can tell you how much I appreciate how fast CBoard is to load, compared with other bulletin boards.

What happened to MURK? :) [/edit]Quote:

... fell in love with wxWidgets and it proved ideal to pursue another long-time dream. There's a post in the games forum about it with "Mediaeval" in the title if you want to learn more. Meanwhile blame wxWidgets. It deserves.
Lots of code has been done after that. But I'll refrain from posting about it for a couple more months at which time I hope have a working client application you folks can comment on.
Well, best of luck in all your programming endeavours, Murk or Media-eval or otherwise. ;)
Check out some of the first paragraph (second? It's the Usage one) here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86Quote:
> And BTW it is Medieval not Mediaeval.
Actually both forms are acceptable being that the latter is old-style, from all that I know.
Ah. Thanks for that. So, the correct old form must be used with the grapheme instead. Good to know.
Well, you could use the "ae" separate form, but to be "medieval", yes, you'd want one character.
Of course, that would probably play havoc with strange character sets. ;)Quote:
Both classical and present practice is to write the letters separately, but the ligature was used in medieval and early modern writings . . . .
About two years ago you told me you'd have a demi-semi-pre-beta-alpha for people to play with. You nead boundaries, Mario!
Yeah. But that project fell.
I'm just keeping with tradition mate! never finish anything. Tradition is a very important thing you know. Especially when it serves you so well.
"Try again. Fail again. Fail better!"
I like that quote.
