Problems with OpenGL(glut) in C++

Okay, first of all...please don't bother posting if you're just going to say "www.google.com" or "search", because i have tried those and either way they don't help.
Now to my problem...can someone explain a step by step tutorial that makes a program that uses glut in Open GL (such as glutinitwindow). Everything i have searched hasn't worked for me, so maybe it's that i am missing something. Having said that don't expect me to know ANYTHING about projects, linkers, etc... because i think i AM missing something. If you need to know what kind of errors I am getting they are usually either a "[build error]" or a "[linker error]".

if this helps I'm also using Dev C++ v 4.9.9.2. Also the program i wrote contains nothing except the necessary things (libraries)- that is no calls to the "errors" even.

are you linking with GLUT?

That's a header file. You need somethin like "-lglut" or such on your "link" command too. [I don't know what the right library name is, but it's along those lines].

yep did -lglut also...trust me i spent like 4 hours looking at sites (yes im frustrated).

Well, undefined references mean that the linker can't find those functions. That in turn usually means that there's something wrong with the list of libraries that you are including. But if you think that all you are doing is exactly right, I guess it's time to look at everything very closely again.

Perhaps also google or post the EXACT error messages. It may be something that someone else recognizes with that particular message.

The problem could be in the project as i am unsure as to if im doing THAT part right. I basically made a project with all the linkers included and made a file with the libraries + compile & run...

where did you put the libraries in your IDE?

i put the libraries in the library folder where all the other .h files and then in a subfolder named GL

the h files go in the include folder, not in the library folder. like include/stdio.h and lib/libc.a

libraries and header files are different things. header files just contain some information about the libraries.

So in order to use a library, you need to do two thing: include the header file, and link wih the library.

like this:

the -lmylib makes the compiler use the code from libmylib.a and use it with your program to make the program file.

So you need to include the glut header file (I think you've done that) and then make sure your IDE has the glut library in the linker settings so that it will know what the heck the header file is talking about.

Also, you don't have to manually put anything in the GL header file directory. How did you install GLUT and GL?

yes sorry i was confused. Correction- the include folder. And about the linker settings, is that the same thing as project options->parameters->linker? Because if it is i have -lglut in there but maybe -lglut isnt even the library...

I'm only "guessing based on what I happened to find on the web", but perhaps you should use "-lglut32"?

If that fails, open a command prompt window, and do "dir /s/b *glut*lib" on the disk where you expect to find your library files. If it's not obvious to you what's the right answer, post the output of this command here. [assuming of course it's not HUGE - it shouldn't be].

-lglut is the option (for gcc at least), [edit: see above] but not the library name. so what is the form name that you put -lglut into, libraries to be added, or linker settings/options?

and what ide are you using?

sorry ide? do you mean like Dev-C++... thats the compiler im using...when i searched lglut nothing was found even though i installed glut.lib in the library folder

-lglut32 didnt work...in fact when i used it the glut linker reference errors went away but about 3 times as many other linker erros came up

in the library folder there are both glut.lib and glut32.lib

Really - are you sure that what happens isn't that you ALSO need some other library to support GLUT?


Again, I may be horribly wrong here, but perhaps this link gives the right answer:

opengl32.lib, glu32.lib, glaux.lib glut32.lib
In gcc that would be:
-lopengl32 -lglu32 -lglaux -lglut32

If you only have -lglut32 I would expect lots of linker errors because glut32 depends on other things.

But again, I'm just guessing.

However, if you are definitely sure that those glut... undefined symbols are gone (and not jjust hiding in a bigger pile of undefined symbols) then I would say that part of the problem is that you don't link in some other necessary libraries.

I don't think that's actually part of the problem. But perhaps you can make Dev-C++ generate a makefile and post that here?

I know several regulars use Dev-C++ here - I don't, I use gcc sometimes, but in conjunction with Emacs as the "IDE" - only because I'm used to Emacs.

I agree with matsp. I'm almost certain that you need to link with those other libraries also.

I think i'm going to give up and maybe wait until I buy visual studio because nothing works...

wait before i stop...can someone explain exactly how i link to the project, that could be the problem. Do i then make a new file IN the project? Do i need additional files i'm missing IN the project????

If you do it on the command line, you would do something like this:
gcc -o myprog myprog.o myfuncs.o -lopengl32 -lglu32 -lglaux -lglut32

You may need OTHER -lxxx too - perhaps -lm for example for math functions.

And of course the "myprog" and "mufuncs" would be names of your files that have been previously compiled into object files.

Also, you don't need to BUY Visual Studio. There is a free version, Visual Studio Express Edition, that is available from MS for no fee at all. Should be as good as any gcc-based produce when it comes to "what you can do", but slightly more "slick" in the integration of the tools into an IDE [my personal opinion].
