Another thread inspires me to ask, how does everyone here pronounce "char?" Do you say "care," because that's the sound those letters make in the word "character," or do you say "char," as in, "I was trying to cook my steak medium rare but charred it instead?"
I usually say the latter, for some reason.
(This question might not be as meaningful for people who's first language isn't English. All bets are off as to how YOU folks pronounce it ;) )
Since it was just short for "character" but was "char", I used to say "car" (if I remember this correctly), but eventually, after finding the need to speak it more often and hearing others speak it, I decided the less ambiguous method was to simply say "char".
Heh, this is like the old SysOp debate. :-)
As has been pointed out, there are generally three ways:
1. care
2. char (like charred, cook, burned)
3. car
I found myself saying "car", then I thought about it being short for "character", so "care" makes since. I'm now working in a company and databases are everyday life, and most people say "char", but I hate that for some reason. I've actually begun to say it a totally different way because I don't like any of the three above. I now say "character"... ;-) Basically I just don't abbreviate the word; and it still bugs the crap out of me when people say "char".

It is "sis op" by the way, as in "system operator", not "si sop". ;-)
I pronounce it the second way. "char" as in "charred".
But I'm the one who used to pronounce "BIOS" as "bee-eye-oh-ess". ;)
When I started BBSing I said sye-sop. Eventually I was "enlightened" (it's obvious, really) but I still think "sye-sop" sounds cooler :) Sounds like the name of some weird alien species.Quote:

I take the "ch" pronounciation from its long form "character" (k sound) and pronounce the rest as would-be "k-ar".
My reasoning is that an "air" sound is not possible from "char" (to form "care"), and since its long form uses a "k" sound for "ch", it sounds aurally odd to pronounce it as "charr" (it would be like abbreviating Zachary ("Zakary") to "Zatch" instead of "Zak"). Then again, we have Bob from Robert, so go figure...
In any event, I always read it as "car", don't think I've ever heard it pronounced "care", and almost always cringe when I hear it pronounced "charr".
I say it as your "charred" variant. "int" is the word "in" with the "t" sound following.
I pronounce it as the first syllable of the word "character", but then again I don't talk to other people a lot (it seems logical to me, though - since the written version is an abbreviation of "character", why not treat the spoken version the same way).
I say "char", as in your charred steak.
I used say "gee-you-eye". Then I heard "gooey". I think I had to have that one written out before I understood what the guy was saying... GUI.Quote:
