Does anybody know if Winmx does actually respect its users privacy? It might seem to the user that it is clean, but has anyone actually seen the source code? It seems to be the only P2P file sharing program that is clean. Others, like Kazza, Limewire and Morpheous to name but a few, just seem to totally take over your computer with all sorts of rubbish. I will only ever use Winmx, am I making the right choice?

Nope, you are making a choice. There are open source alternatives, such as eMule/BitTorrent (I think), you can look inside those to your heart's content.
Just be aware that closed source systems have their benefits, too. They can't be subverted so easily by leechers who like to take and not give. The bottom line is:- if you've been using the software for a while, haven't noticed anything untoward happening with your system and (get this) you LIKE it, there is no reason that you should be parted from said software, barring a window appearing on startup saying "OMGWTF!!!11!!! WE'VE CHANGED OUR EULA! ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US R0FLMA0!11!!!111" :rolleyes:

True, but I've never ever heard of someone using Kazaa, Morpheus, or Limewire to download anything legal.
Thankyou 7smurfs for your warning but I dont P2P software is actually illegal. Although, I think if the owner of the copyrighted materials wanted to actually prosecute, eg. Britney Spears decided she wanted to take joe blogs to court for downloading her music without paying, then maybe in that sense you could be breaking the law. But, with P2P being so common, it has been accepted as "normal". So I think that it being illegal, is actually an individual case, between the owner and the person downloading. Lets face it, most people have done it at some time or another. And if it were deemed to be "illegal", then I think that it would be right at the lower scale of crime, in comparison to offences such as "phishing", "spamming", "cyber stalking", and such like.

I use Ares Galaxy. It's open source so I trust it not to be doing anything nasty. Haven't looked at it myself though.

Napster was prosecuted. The fundamental difference between Napster and P2P networks is that Napster was centralized, and a subpoena could be sent to where the illegal material was being stored - you can't do that with P2P.
In any case, it's still an illegal copyright violation, and you know what that means. Closed.
And before I get PMs saying that P2P software is not illegal - don't expect me to believe he's not downloading illegal music.
