Direct x 8.1 MSVS C++6 Problems

I currently use MSVS C++6.0 and I just downloaded DirectXSDK 8.1 and installed it. Then I go to tools: options: directories... to change the location of the include files and the library files to the correct paths. I now get errors on real simple examples when I try to compile source code that used to compile without errors i.e.

compiling...
Error spawning cl.exe

Resistance is futile.exe - 1 error(s), 0 warning(s)

Any ideas what I am doing incorrectly?

Boy oh boy am I an Idoit.

I didn't include ... \Common\MSDev\Bin in the exe tab.

Thanks to all who read this post in an attempt to help me out. It only took me 3 hours to figure out this stupid mistake.
