Just need more help...

I hate starting so many threads on so many different help subjects (hipefully my threads help others to)...

But my code is getting pretty big and messy. I want to know if it is possible to devide it up somehow, like in sections of code or different sheets of code (didn't know what else to call it). I think it is pretty easy doing this but of course I don't know how.

Before you write your code layout the different steps your program will go through. Each step can be a different function. Then you just need to figure out what variables need to be passed into and returned from those functions.

Do you mean to devide it up into files or?
Making classes and/or structures also helps..

I mean physicly devided. I guess into different files or something. So like for my rpg one could have the battling. The other could be the main menu. And so on.

Modularization Theory: Each function/class does one thing. Each file does one collection of related things. Each program brings collections of things together into a whole.

To answer your question, yes it is possible. The only real problem is making sure that shared resources are visible everywhere they need to be while still only defining them once. This is done with header files, and you can find countless threads on the topic by using a board search.

Maybe I won't worry about that yet...

The first step is learning how to break this up into functions. Once you are comfortable with that breaking the functions into multiple files will be easy.

well I'll just continue doing it the way I am now and when I learn more about c++ I'll come back to this subject.

You seem to be very intelligent to grasp things and your questions are as well. I have no doubt if you gave a decent tutorial a chance you would be done it in no time and your questions would be a little more advanced as well as your code - in relation to how long it took you to learn it that is.

I had the hardest time understanding this when I first started programming.

Let me give you a simple example...

Lets say this file is called Functions.h

Code:

Now in that file you have declared prototypes for your functions.

the #ifndef #define is what keeps the functions from being declared more than once. Its saying "Hey, if this file was already declared... nevermind!"


Here is a file called Functions.cpp

void Func2()

    std::cout << "Hello";

Now that file defines the functions.

and here is main.cpp

LOL, I have read a ton of tuts. well ok 1-17 about. But in my opinion the tuts arn't the best sometimes. Oh and I don't have a local library around my area. My city pop is arund 3k lol. And I guess I am ruching this. But I sorta needed this for my game.

Edit: This is just plain stupid now! The more I add the more errors that make no sence come. The most errors I had so far were 54.

your main() is nested inside of startprogram(). That's not allowed.

first thing I would do is make a struct with all of that info your using for your traits.

your code is able to find the fight function because you protyped it in the header file so as long as you include that your fine

Ok here is what I got...

I got info.h wich has all the variables in it.

Then I got createplayer.h and .cpp.

In create player .cpp I had to use some of the variables used in info.h. But it says that the variables are undiclared. Even if I put

Now in another cpp file you can get access to the variable by including the header file.

It works like this

The variable is declared in a source file, but the variables scope is only in the file it is declared in.

This is where extern comes into play. It lets that variable be external of its original scope so you can use it globaly through out your project.

Keep in mind that most of the time globals are not good to use, but thats something to worry about later on. :)

I have that error a couple of times with P_ def too.

Those varaibles worked in other places but here and a couple other places it doesn't like for some reason.

Hmm, I would need to see the code of the actual declarations of those variables.

did you make them int's?

Maybe you could put your code into a zip file or something and post it so we can see what the problem is.

Is P_health declard in the file? If it's in variables.h/cpp, are you including variables.h?

In callmainmenu() you're missing a closing bracket on your while loop... I'm surprised you didn't get an error before. Other than that, I didn't see anything particularly wrong when I glanced over your code.

I am seeing a few brackets you forgot to close. Thats probably the problem

Go back and check your opening and closing brackets ;)

Yep close that bracket and it will work!

lol pretty soon I will have people swaring at me LOL. Ok I'll go and close some brackets lol.
