i recently read in an article about CORBA 3 over half of the world's programmers use COBOL...CORBA now includes a mapping to COBOL
Well in the book on Mainframe Assembler (PC/370 actually), Bill Qualls says that the reason for learning such an ancient, 2nd generation language, is [among other things] with all the programs being used by companies, upgrading wuld be absolute h*ll! I'm sure we'll eventually have to go through a cycle of new companies coming in, using a high generation, and old companies will just shrivel up and die! DIE THEY WILL! DIE!

What good does COBOL do? What is it used for?

It's a programming lang used largely in mainframes. I'd suspect that the reason half the code in the world (or whatever) is written in it is simply because it's around for so long, and the programs written in it still work fine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?
