Hi all,
I've tried dual booting Windows and Linux, Windows 98 and Windows XP with no problems.
How do I dual boot my machine to Windows 98 and Windows ME? Can anybody help? I need this dual boot because the Windows 98 is going to be a Chinese version.
I plan to have ME on c:\ and 98 on d:\

You can't dual boot 98 and ME. Neither has a boot manager. NT, 2000, and XP do. Linux also has one.
Yes you can, you'd just need to use a 3rd-party boot manager.

Who the hell cares. I meant they do not come with a boot manager. ME is the biggest piece of crap that Microsoft has released. It is not even worth speaking.
I would agree that ME is kind of cruddy. It is not as good as 98 SE. Actually, the most stable Windows machine I have seen is my mom's old 486 Dell with 12mb of ram. She is running Windows 95. :) You can marginally improve the stability of ME if you set the virtual memory manually. But it still sucks, and things tend to go corrupted badly in a hurry. The best move I made was when I formatted and went straight Linux - it has run nicely for me. Next move will be FreeBSD. :D
Either use a not-too-expensive boot manager like PowerQuest BootMagic or a completely free e.g. XOSL...
Both should achieve the same tasks..
I actually had installed ME on my dads Acer machine (500MHZ) because he insisted on ME even after my protesting. After having set it up my way it has been running for a little over 6 months with no shutdowns but a few reboots and has never had a single hangup or crash.......but yea, ME licks balls.
Nice to have the guts to play w/ FreeBSD. But make sure you pick the stable release, the latest being version 4.8. By the end of this month version 4.9 will be released, if all's according to plan.Quote:

AFAIK, anything version 5 is in the CURRENT release, not guaranteed to give you a stable system.
As for me, I'm waiting for version 4.9 :D
I my self currently have a three way with Windows 98SE (to play final fantasy 7) Windows XP Pro, and Red Hat Linux 8. I don't really care for the extra things added by Red Hat. I prefer the Slackware Distribution.
I have never had a problem with ME when I was using it. Where and why the whole "ogmz MEi s teh sux0rz" nonsense came from, I can't answer.

Well one the many that I do, since I'm A+ certified is service personal computers. Out of the hundreds I've serviced only ME suffered from out of the box network crashes, and issues such as you could not type in the edit control object anymore, the items in the control panel just disappeared. These are the things that I base my opinion on that ME is the biggest piece of crap that microsoft has release. So then prove me wrong.
I can't say that any of the Microsoft computers are unstable because frankly I haven't ever had one crash on me. I guess I never really used it for too much until lately. I think the new Mandrake Linux looks REALLY nice for someone like me who needs to be able to use some of the Windows stuff like Word and all and is has loads of support. I hear its one of the best for newbies at linux like me

RedHat 8 hardly crashes for me, neither does Mandrake 9.0. So I guess Linux doesnt suck...

Stating that you are A+ certified isnt really increasing your credibility. Certs dont really mean that much, and more than a handfull of us have that one, its the easiest one to obtain. Several people here have no certs and could gain 90% of them in their sleep.
I also serviced many, many machines at Gateway and NEVER could it e solely blamed on ME. Yes, i have had ME related problems, but not as widely spread as many claim.
I think BMJ phrased it best, and i would love to see documentation as to why it was ONLY ME that cause "hundreds" or out of the box problems, because i dont buy it.
My Linux sucks statement was taken all wrong. How does saying that one OS or another sucks contribute to the original topic?
Ceritfications may mean nothing to you, RoD, but to buisnesses it means EVERYTHING. Hell I've been programming on my own and fixing PC's for a heck of alot longer than those that just come out of school could ever imagine. I can run circles around people and make there heads swim at the speed of light. But no company wants to take a programmer, or any profession for that matter, serious untill you get a degree. So as to having a certification means alot. Sure it is easy, but only if you can answer the questions wrong. My test for A+ was about 90% wrong answers to pass. It was a load of malarky. And for many of people it is not easy to pass.

However, I know the point you are making, so lets go with the thought. Yes, there are a lot of people who get down on Windows Me. A lot of the same play up 98 SE. Personally I have never used 98 SE. I had 98 on my computer when I bought it. It ran very badly. I got a pre-release/trial version of Me from a friend of mine, and since it ran quite a bit better than the 98 I was running, I stuck with it, and eventually ended up buying the OS, which I still have sitting on a shelf. I used Me for a couple of years, dual booting with Linux and on it's own. I have found through my own experience that things start out well from a clean install, and then it goes downhill after that. Eventually it ends up like velius said where stuff starts to disappear, and if you want to do a system restore, its too bad because everything is so corrupt it won't let you. After a while it gets to the point where you have to reboot at least once per session. That is unnacceptable to me. Occasionally I have to reboot my Linux box. That is more than I would like. Anyway, my experience has been that I do not prefer Windows Me over against the Linux OS. As far as this having nothing to do with the original topic, you are correct. However this is a discussion board, and the original question was satisfactorily answered, was it not? :D

Certs dont mean jack anymore. Any two baked half wit can get certified in almost anything, even cisco is becoming a joke. I never said they never mean anything, i said they dont mean anything here.
For instance, pull your head out of your ass and take a look around. Its pretty stupid to have such a cocky attitude when your probably only average compared to many, many of the people who post here.

Erm, most of you guys have misunderstood my question. I didn't complain about ME. I don't know whether ME is good or bad.
All I need to know is how to install ME and 98 in a same machine. NOT 98 - ME - XP - XP. It's ME - 98.

lol...well now, looks like BMJ was correct, and netboy was not helped by any of this. So no xosl for now. You might want to have a look at this page. Scroll down a little til you get to the 'Dual Boot Windows!' part. Might find something useful there.
You mentioned Linux... if you have the space on the HD, why not just install ME, then install 98, and then install Linux and let the bootloader take care of the dual booting? (I'm kinda assuming you have two hard drives. I don't know if you can install two versions of Windows on one hard drive, but you probably can)Quote:

To netboy, go third party. But in the future try to stay away from ME, more headaches than the pretty colors are worth. And yes like any windows it has it's bugs and it'll have users who love it and those who hate it. But it has one big flaw, they took an OS that rely's on DOS, hacked it up so that it didn't rely on DOS 100%, and left the other part to luck. I recently formatted a few computers at school (mostly laptops) that came with ME on them, they all had really really weird quirks that came from problems occuring on the kernel level. For instance, our HS computer teacher (I use the term loosely :rolleyes: ) could go into any rich/text edit box, text editing program, even the DOS shell, type a few characters, then the pc would spit out 8 junk characters, repeat what she typed, then repeat the junk characters again. There was no way to fix it (plus other weird crashes were happening). I formatted and put w2k on it. Works fine now, no problems at all. She's generally a good user so i know it wasn't something she corrupted....of course if the kernel was corrupted it wouldn't boot anyway so yeah. Anywho, that's my 2 cents on ME and it's fallbacks.

Hi guys, I've found out the solution from a friend of mine.
(Using BootMagic)
*partition the hdd
*install the win98
*install bootmagic n create the rescue disk
*boot to the other partition, wif bootdisk usin bootmagic ctrl
*do normal installation oso (winme)
*boot back the the first partition usin rescue disk
*insert winme into the list...
