I have something even better to say than "DirectX is by Microsoft" Here it is: run a frickin' board search. This is a weekly topic, and you'll find a ton of threads.

The main difference is that OpenGL is strictly a graphics library while DX is for graphics, sound, input, and stuff... Both have similar capabilites in terms of Rendering ability and hardware acceleration.
Frankly though, I can understand using either API for graphics... I know there are a lot of pro-OGL programmers here, but I've also talked to some talented DX programmers, and again I say - I can understand choosing to use either/or/both APIs.
