This and MS Blast are some scary sheeit. I can't imagine what I'd do without the Internet or *gasp* electricity.
I'm currently in the outage area. Just south of Toronto.
Then how are you posting on the internet? :)
This is pretty messed up.
My used to handle this stuff a couple of years ago, it doesnt add up.
3 Places are down when they make there own power. I live near one. They are not normally connected. They are only connected when a man actually goes out to the station, the computers only tell what stat there in.
So these places should never be down. I know a couple of firemen in my town, I also have a scanner(radio). There calling back all cops from a border, something that is very odd.
This has happened before(once in the 60s and once in the 70s), but it was from over load(they were back feeding, my dad was there).
So something is wrong.
Im not trying to say that its a attack, but its not one little thing.
Plus you have to remember this stuff is old. Did you hear about the subway evacution? It was because of water. It was made in the early 1900's. The pumps used to be run by air, my dad left when they were switching to electric. There was enough money for a backup(power supply).
This is very freaky stuff, most becuase I know people who would be dealing with this if it was a couple years ago.
Im going to be glued to Fox News for awhile now.
Also phones went out.
The phone companies are required to have batter backup like a UPS for 2 hours, legaly. The Phones never shoudl of went out. The phones are more like the internet, on single point.
Very strange.
<edit>
Listen to a scanner if you have one.
Nothing to be scared off but its one of those things that should never happen.
<edit 2>
Now my hospital has a fire alarm activation, this will be fun.
<edit 3>
Now my town is having generator problems and Plattsburg doesnt sound that great. Plus every own is mixing up frequencies.
Atleast my cable is on and decent.
>>Then how are you posting on the internet?
I'm at work right now, and we have a couple of huge diesel generators.
There were quite a few lightning strikes in that area. That could have had something to do with it.
>>There were quite a few lightning strikes in that area.
By 'that area' do you mean the Eastern seaboard?
yeah, around New York. The outage was from there up through the Mohawk area right? ( i live out west now so i havent heard that much about it. I used to live in ontario though )Quote:

The system was overloaded, and shut down.
I think it was that there was something awry in a plant in Canada, and the NY plant shut itself down so it didn't get fried trying to support the rest of the grid.Quote:

actually their saying (on the news) that it started at a plant on the US side of the Niagra Falls. nothing official yet thoughQuote:

and Niagra flat-out denies that they've had anything to do with failures, and is calling themselves the "rock" of what power is left.
Something happen on our side, the was black some coming from transformers.
Those arent the little ones in toy cars, there the specialized biug boys. There kooled by special oil and have very little inside(nothing really to brake/burn). So something gave it a big enough surge to burn. It was serious.
Plus that kind of stuff isnt fixed, its replaced. It would probally still works but it replaced for saftey.
I love how they said its not a problem and thats what happened as they turned it off. I wish i still lived there, i probally could of got to check some of this out.
Like I said before, there was 3 towns with out power that make there own, thats just wrong(the grids dont work like that on there own). Telephones went out, again wrong(the backups like i said before). Guess we had some new people today...
Perspective, Im like 15 mins from that area(not where it happened but by the reservation). My part is fine.

Learn yourself some anything. All of the news channels are blathering on about how that was just thier emergency shutoff system, and not a fire or any sort of serious problem.
Im going with Bloomberg on this one.
He said the Con Ed transformer on 14th had smoke coming out of it. With that specialized oil burning means something short, not just back feeding
I wish I knew what oil they use, getting smoke isnt that common. But it wasnt a fire so it cant be that bad.
Any one hear a real discussion on the grid? Fox had a decent one, but they didnt mention the 3, there the ones that are bugging me. Along with the phone deal.
My #1 rule: If its on Fox don't trust it

I like a channel that actually gets people some asked questions, not what they feel like saying or what will make them look good. They get stuff when its news not a rummor. Plus they actually have decent shows.
A channel for people with balls in their pants, not in there mouths
--Me when ever i hear a rambeling about CNN
First off I can make little sense of your first two paragraphs. And Calling back the police from the border does not seem odd since they will need to direct traffic and keep order until the power comes back on...Quote:

Of course I'm not worried, but I will be if the power goes out here :) (Washington State)
I figured they keep a couple, just seems funny to me. Plus it not by NYC.Quote:

Is that suppose to be an insult?Quote:

I don't mind some of the programs on Fox, but after watching what they call news I'm leary. I don't watch CNN (never had cable). I get my news from multiple sources and take it all with a grain of salt.
Fox news consists of allen iverson and rape charges, its teh gay. As for all this ohter crap, crazy $$$$.
I Like to watch the Oriely Factor, even if he says something I don't agree with its nice to see him actually get angry over some topics. He seems to actually care about what he discusses (well really argues).
power shortages are common in my country sice we are providinf free electricity to agriculture there is always a power cut.. say a few hours a day.. But here every one, every business establishment, phone companies, traffic lights etc etc have UPS and generators... so it really dosent make a difference... Generators and UPS sell like hot cakes here... Boy powercut there seems to be such a big issue....
>>Boy powercut there seems to be such a big issue....
We in the west are not used to going without.....
The worry is that if the pumping stations are down for more than 24 hours it will take two weeks to get the sewerage and water back on.
If you don't know what you're talking about, stop posting. I work for a power company, and I can promise you, you don't know jack. Stop talking.Quote:

The outage pretty much killed my night last night. I was supposed to have a nice evening with my girlfriend, and instead it was spent driving around Michigan trying to find a hotel with power that wasn't booked.
Also, what the hell was with all these morons at the gas stations? They were backed up into the goddam streets. I was at a gas station, and one guy filled up his truck, 4 small gas cans, and a bigass reserve tank in his truck's bed. I know some people had generators, but Jesus.
We also heard a lady call into a radio station asking if people were missing, since it talks about that in Revelations or some crap. I can't believe how much people blew this out of proportion.
yeah im glad i didnt lose power, cuz if i did, i would have to watch tv by candlelight, and that would be no fun at all
Last night, as soon as NJ started to come back on, we got flooded with calls from people who couldn't browse, because our DHCP servers were overloaded by all of the requests coming in.
Lots of calls went like this:
Customer: 'Yeah... we just had a small power outage and now I don't have any TV or internet...'
Me: 'Actually, sir, a large part of the North-Eastern US is without power right now'
Customer: 'Oh... well how am I supposed to find that out when I can't watch TV?'
Me: 'If you'd like I can try to put you in touch with your local cable office.'
Customer: 'Why can't you fix it?
Me: 'Is there a cable light on your modem, sir?'
Customer: 'No'
Me: 'Unfortunately if there isn't a cable light, it is an issue that your local office has to deal with. Do you have any questions before I transfer you?'
Of course, the cable office still didn't have power at that time, so some other poor SOB in my building probably got him.
The religious crap that comes with these things is $$$$ing retarded.
I think most of the power is back now. I was without power for twenty something hours I believe... :(
i was outof power for almost 24 hours... it was a mess. since it's near the weekend, the freezer is almost empty of things that can be eaten raw or uncooked or without putting in the microwave. so thursday afternoon was mostly spent driving around and trying to find food places that weren't already sold out or closed. couldn;t go too far because the gas tank was half full and there was no pumping stations around. but i consider ppl in my area lucky because we had running water.
come to think of it, i never thought a blackout could cause so much chaos.
one thing that ........ed me off the most was not the fact that the power went out, but the fact that the idiots were playing the blame game and complaining.... not that anyone cares, but i have one thing i have to say, $$$$ happens....deal with it, fix it so it doesn;t happen again and get on with ur damn lives. complaining and blaming is not gonna get u anywhere.
[edit] thursday night was kinda fun... sure wish the bugs weren't there though
